How to Level Up and Get Skill Points in Sonic Frontiers

Keep movin' forward.

Over the years, Sonic the Hedgehog has had a pretty firmly established kit. He runs fast, he spins into a ball, and he does a homing attack. In Sonic Frontiers, though, that old bread and butter isn’t enough to solve the mystery of the Starfall Islands. To truly be the fastest thing alive, this old hedgehog needs to learn some new tricks. Here’s how to level up and get Skill Points in Sonic Frontiers.

How to Level Up and Get Skill Points in Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers utilizes a Skill Tree system, allowing Sonic to steadily rise in power and learn new abilities and skills. These include new flashy attacks like the Phantom Rush, movement abilities like Air Trick, and utilities like Auto Combo. In order to unlock these Skills, you need to activate their corresponding nodes on the Skill Tree, and to do that, you need Skill Points.

The number of Skill Points you currently have are indicated by the meter on the bottom-right corner of your screen. Every time the meter fills all the way up, you get 1 Skill Point. While 1 Skill Point is enough to unlock your first Skill, you’ll need to bank progressively more than that to unlock more Skills.

A Matter of Skill

To fill up the Skill Point meter, you need to collect Skill Pieces, little blue-green diamond thingies dropped when you defeat an enemy or smash a breakable object. You can also get Skill Pieces from side activities like fishing. Most enemies will drop around 5 Skill Pieces at a time, which scores you a combined 100 points on the Skill Point meter.

You need a total of 600 points on the Skill Point meter to level up and receive a Skill Point, though that number increases every time you receive a Skill Point. When you’ve earned a Skill Point, an exclamation point will appear on the Skill Point meter to remind you to use it. To do that, just pause the game and open the Skills menu to check out the Skill Tree. Any Skills that are available will be lit up on the tree; if you want one, just select it and press the confirm button to spend your Skill Points.

One last side note: any Skills you unlock can only be used in the Open Zone areas. You can’t use Skills in the Cyber Space levels, nor can you get Skill Pieces. However, in the loading screens between Open Zones and Cyber Space, you can enter a training room where you can practice any Skills you’ve unlocked.

Explore the Starfall Islands thoroughly, mopping up mooks and breaking stuff, to get all the Skill Points you need to become the fastest thing alive!
