How to Install Mods to Bonelab on PC and Meta Quest 2

Make your VR jaunt a little more personal.

While Bonelab does have its own self-contained campaign and content, it’s not just a standalone game. It’s also an experimental platform and proof of concept, a medium through which developers can tinker with the idea of VR gaming. To that end, Bonelab is highly receptive to modding and user-created content. Here’s how to install mods to Bonelab on PC and Meta Quest 2.

How to Install Mods to Bonelab on PC and Meta Quest 2

Both versions of Bonelab, be it on PC via Steam or through a standalone Meta Quest 2 headset, are fully compatible with a variety of user-created content. You can install a bunch of different custom mod packs, including:

  • Original levels
  • New unlocks
  • Texture packs for existing levels and assets
  • Character/Avatar skins
  • New weapons

You can make mods yourself if you’ve got the know-how, but there are also plenty of sites you can download mods created by other players. Two of the most popular sites for Bonelab are Mod.io and NexusMods, both of which are free to use with an account.

Installing the Mods

Once you’ve downloaded and unpacked a mod file, you’ll need to drop it into the game’s directory. This directory is different depending on whether you’re playing on a PC or a Meta Quest.

Starting with the PC version, find this directory in your local storage:

  • AppData/locallow/Stress Level Zero/Bonelab/Mod

The AppData folder is hidden by default, but you can access it through the Windows Run app. Just type “AppData” into the prompt and it’ll open the folder. Just drop your mod files into the Mod folder, and you’ll be able to access them in the in-game lab.

The principle is the same if you’re using a Meta Quest headset, though the file path is a little longer. Do note that, even if you’re not playing the game on a PC, you will need a PC to connect to your headset and access the files. Starting from the window that opens when you access the Meta Quest’s local storage, this is the directory you want:

  • Quest 2/Internal Shared Storage/Android/data/com.StressLevelZero.BONELAB/Files/Mods

Again, just drop the mod into the Mod folder, and you’re good to go. Make sure you’re using the right file, though, as some mods have different versions for PC and Quest.

Feel free to experiment with lots of different mods and skins! The Bonelab modding community is thriving, so you can find all sorts of wacky nonsense to entertain yourself with.
