How to Import Splatoon 2 Data to Splatoon 3

No need to start completely from scratch.

Anyone who played Splatoon 2 during its heyday knows what a huge deal it was for the Nintendo Switch. Heck, when the Switch first came out, it was one of the big reasons people bought one, right up there with Mario Kart. If you put a bunch of time into Splatoon 2, Splatoon 3 is prepared to recognize you for your efforts. Here’s how to import Splatoon 2 data to Splatoon 3.

If you have a Splatoon 2 save file on your Nintendo Switch, either in your internal storage or on an inserted SD memory card, then Splatoon 3 will read it automatically the first time you boot it up. The game will identify your save file, including your screen name and playtime, and ask you whether you want to import the data.

If you say yes, then the data will carry over, unlocking a few handy features for you. Before you can use those features, you will need to complete the tutorial to enter Splatsville and compete in at least one online match. Additionally, you will need to be connected to the internet for the game to read your old profile. Make sure you choose to import the data when you get the prompt, as you’ll only get it once.

So what, exactly, does importing your Splatoon 2 save data do for you? First and foremost, importing data will grant you three Golden Sheldon Licenses. These licenses can be taken to Sheldon’s shop, Ammo Knights, and exchanged for any weapon in his entire catalog, regardless of its required level. These are great if you want to get your old favorite weapon back.

Secondly, Ranked Anarchy Battles will be immediately unlocked. Normally, you’d need to reach level 10 for this, but if you’ve got the save data, then the game will let you jump in right away. Additionally, your starting rank will be adjusted to approximately whatever your rank was in Splatoon 2 so you don’t have to start over from the bottom.

Finally, Splatoon 3 will read your play statistics from Splatoon 2 to match you against other players of your actual skill level, rather than just pitting you against noobs. Hope you’ve already shaken the rust off.

Incidentally, if you don’t have Splatoon 2 save data but do have access to a copy of the game (borrow from a friend, never opened one, etc.), you can launch it really quick just to generate some data for yourself. Just play through Splatoon 2’s tutorial real quick and enter Inkopolis Square, and that’ll be enough to get you some save data.
