How to get seeds in Dwarf Fortress

Seeds are an essential part of being able to grow food in Dwarf Fortress, as you may expect. As you plant more and more seeds in your farmland, you may notice, with horror, that you start to run out of seeds thanks to orange text. But no matter how much foraging you do, no seeds ever seem to appear in your barrels.

Seeds, in Dwarf Fortress, aren’t acquired the same way as in most other games. There are two ways to acquire them.

Trading

Every autumn, traders will visit your outpost. If you’re still all alive by then. They will bring with them many, many goods, but most importantly, loads of seeds. You can trade for as many seeds as you want and start growing. However, it may not be the smartest option to fully rely on them, however, as it will be difficult to plan exactly how many seeds you need as the game can be unpredictable.

It would be a good opportunity to trade for many seeds, however, as they are cheap and you will need them.

Seeds from seeds

Another way to get seeds is, interestingly, exactly how you would get them in real life. From the vegetables themselves. This part won’t be micromanaged by you exactly, as the dwarves can eat raw vegetables and then will deposit the seeds into a barrel. Naturally, this won’t happen if the vegetables are cooked.

Due to the organic nature of vegetables and seeds, make sure to keep a cat nearby to ward off pests.
