How to Get Rid of Mussel Shells in Dwarf Fortress

Be gone you pesky mussel shells!

We’re back with another guide on simulation games that focus on customization, construction, and management. These are all qualities in a game that we are personally all for. Dwarf Fortress is an indie game where you can build a fortress for your dwarves so you can protect them from threats from the outside. The mechanics seem easy enough where you’re trying to build an economy for pixel-styled dwarves. As you’re exploring the surroundings of your cave, you’ve probably noticed mussels gathering at your fishing spots. If you kill those mussels you will gain shells from them and gathering them is tedious because of how useless they appear in your storage. If you’re all about organizing we’re going to teach you how to get rid of mussel shells in Dwarf Fortress.

Getting rid of Mussel Shells in Dwarf Fortress

We get it. You hate wasting space in your storage because you’re not sure what mussels shells are used for in the game. After you have killed a mussel the shells will overrun your storage. Thankfully, there’s a simple solution to this task. It’s going to require you to implement your crafting station or use the trading system established.

Crafting in Dwarf Fortress is very useful because you can make items such as armor or jewelry. In order to craft using mussel shells you’re going to want to head over to the crafts dwarfs workshop. From there, make sure you have unlocked the skill called bone carver. With this skill, you can craft items that deal with bones, shells, ivory, horns, and pearl goods. In order to train it just stand over a pile of bones and carve them to give you an item.

After you have trained bone carver, take your mussel shells to the crafting station and make items that use these items. Try creating items such as shell armor or using work orders that can help you make large shell gems.

Trading in Dwarf Fortress

Another useful tool if you don’t want to craft your mussel shells is by using the trading system added to the game. We suggested using the crafting system to handle work orders so you can make items such as large shell gems. Trading will allow you to sell those items or you can use them to make your space look nice. They can be used as decorative pieces. If you’re unfamiliar with trading you should first start by creating a trade depot that’s located in the building menu.

After you have placed the trade depot somewhere accessible creatures that range from elves, humans, and dwarves will come to visit you to trade. This is when you can start trading your mussel shells or you could trade the items you have crafted from mussel shells to local buyers. If you’re really not satisfied with those two options to dispose of the shells you can always toss them near a volcano.
