In Dwarf Fortress, change is constantly happening. You must deal with one threat and surprise after another. Some surprises, however, are more benign and apparently harmless than others, such the growing presence of floor fungus. Floor fungus will constantly grow and cover your floor like a breathing carpet. Creepy. Here is how to deal with floor fungus in Dwarf Fortress.
What is Floor Fungus in Dwarf Fortress?
Floor fungus in Dwarf Fortress is – thankfully – harmless and no, you’re dwarves don’t mind it or care at all about it. Floor fungus grows upon soil levels of a cavern. If the soil can host farmland, then floor fungus will eventually grow there considering you would have opened space for it. There is no stopping the rather rapid growth of the floor fungus once it starts.
Floor fungus does have some uses. You animals can graze on it as though it were grass, so you can set up a pasture inside and your animals can live in the safety of your fortress instead of the perils of the outside. Additionally, plants may grow upon the fungus which you can harvest from, giving you another reason not to step outside. Aside from that, there is only an aesthetic change.
Most players will ignore the floor fungus or even promote its growth for those purposes. But if you don’t want it, there is only one thing you can do.

How to get rid of Floor Fungus in Dwarf Fortress
To get rid of floor fungus, you will have to dig out the floor using the channel tool. Due to this, players are generally advised to not build on soil layers and instead only use them for the keeping of farmland and livestock.
Otherwise, simply digging away the floor and replacing it with stone, metal or wood is your only option to not have floor fungus grow.
