What are Research Parts?

Research Parts are an essential part of upgrading in DREDGE. They are used for players to research specific equipment, that when putting Parts into an upgrade, the materials will become available for purchase via the Shipwright. You should focus a lot of your attention on upgrading here, especially for those looking to upgrade their Boat and Rod. You will have a loot of options on what to research, with varying rates of Research Parts needed for the bigger and better the upgrade. The upgrades available have 4 categories: Rod, Engine, Pots and Nets.

These focus on particular parts of the Boat, be that how many fish you want to catch at once, or to obtain a better engine for your long hours on the water. Whatever you want to focus on, you can do it here, within the Research area of DREDGE. To use Research Parts, dock at the Town and select ‘Research’ as the last option above your Boat. This will bring up the Research Menu. Your Parts counter is tallied on the top-left hand side and to use the Parts all you need to do is hover on what you want and select it to begin your Research.

How to Get Research Parts

Research Parts are obtained through various ways. You will want to try to get Research Parts whenever you can as these are a key component to upgrade your gear in DREDGE. In order to get Research Parts you can either complete Pursuits which are in-game Quests given by NPCs throughout your journey, by visiting other Regions and docking at their Towns or to regularly speak to those who are in your Home Town of Greater Marrow. Fulfilling Pursuits are key to progressing throughout the main story of DREDGE, so obtaining Research Parts should come naturally this way.

Other alternative ways of getting Research Parts is through fishing and visiting the Travelling Merchant. Whilst these are more opportunistic and are not more viable than Pursuits, you will be able to get your hands on multiple Parts if you goal is to Research for upgrading Boat-related gear. When fishing, you need to look for the bubbles on the surface that show no indication of a floating object of fish silhouettes underneath. These can offer rarer items and in different circumstances, those Research Parts you require. When visiting the Merchant, you can purchase a Research Part here, however, its pricing is steep being at $300. This is not a viable route of getting Research Parts due to its pricing but the option is available if you are desperate to upgrade your Boat for those longer expeditions out in the dark wilderness.
