In the midst of war, bullets fly with very little time to assess if there is another time or resources to reload. Jagged Alliance is known to throw its playerbase into the deep end of incredibly limited resources, especially gunpowder and the ability to craft ammo. Although you have a ton of freedom to explore and loot up, the hunt for both gunpowder and ammo has left players feeling completely lost and having to bring knives to a gunfight. Regardless of which weapon you have preference for over others, you will find that the task of gaining ammo if far harder than defeating any actual enemies in game. Even when defeating an enemy, there is no guarantee that you will pick up their ammo, or even their weapon for that matter. This is Vincent’s guide on where to find gunpowder and get ammo in Jagged Alliance 3.
Where to Find Gunpowder in Jagged Alliance 3
The most viable method to gain gunpowder in Jagged Alliance 3 is to break down Pipe Bombs using the Wire Cutters. In order to create gunpowder however, players need to go into their Inventory and combine the Wire Cutters with the chosen explosives, in this case the Pipe Bomb. This will grant the player with gunpowder. The issue here is that Pipe Bombs do not appear in abundance on this game and therefore, players may need to alter their playstyle to accommodate for this. Both the Wire Cutters and Pipe Bomb need to be inside a single Merc’s pack so it is best to use a character with high strength to hold onto all of your gear, primarily including ammo and gunpowder.
Suggestions are to adopt a more stealthier approach in the early portion of the game, utilizing Melee Weapons and having high Agility Stats with Mercenaries such as Fox and Blood. This however, may not suit a lot of people’s playstyle but with limited options and a ton of Assault or SMG ammo being used in every fight, you may find that you have nothing left for the more intense battles.

How to Get More Ammo
Ammo can be crafted in Jagged Alliance 3. From the most basic method of creating ammo using Parts, to needed a higher damage, more efficient ammo supply with the use of gunpowder. When you are looking to craft ammo using the gunpowder you have found or base Parts you have collected, head to the Satellite View and select the Ammo Crafting option in Operations (scroll down). You will need a Merc with high Explosive Stats. At the early portion of the game and throughout, we highly recommend Barry. Your standard ammo will cost you both Parts and either .44 or 9mm Ammo whilst other options require specific equipment that you may find or need to purchase such as Flares. Parts can be stripped from salvaging unwanted weapons.
But as you will note from above, there are not many methods to get gunpowder in the game. Whilst there is a small chance that ammo is dropped by militia you have taken out during battle, the amount of bullets you have wasted to pick up less than the total amount of shells scattered on the battlefield does not feel like an appropriate method to save and collect ammo supplies. Because of this, players may need to adopt a more rationing approach where, similarly to dealing with the gunpowder limit, players are reduced to using Handguns and Melee Weapons and putting their Assault Rifles and SMGs away for now.
Alternatively, players have created Mods for Jagged Alliance 3 that increase the drop rate for ammo. There is a lot of options available already but here is what we recommend:
- Drop Everything by Estruktix – 50% drop rate increase of ammo on defeated militia.
- 2X Ammo Drops by Estruktix – 2x the base drop rate of ammo.
- More Ammo X2 – x2 drop rate chance of ammo.
- More Ammo X3 – x3 drop rate chance of ammo.
Whilst you do not have to play the game with mods, they offer an easy solution that does not ruin the Jagged Alliance experience.
