How to Get All Starter Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Defy the Laws of Man and 'Mon!

In each mainline Pokémon game, you’re expected to cope with indecision and pick a starter ‘mon from three options. Usually, these options consist of a grass type, a water type, or a fire type, and they change from generation to generation. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, your starter choices are:

  • Sprigatito (grass type)
  • Quaxly (water type)
  • Fuecoco (fire type)

But, what if we told you there’s a way to defy the laws of man and ‘mon? What if there was a way to avoid having to choose only one? Interested? Read on to learn how you can conquer the system and claim each starter in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

How to Get All Starters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

It should be noted first and foremost that the methods to obtaining all starters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet aren’t as mysterious as I might’ve implied. But, they are legitimate methods, so give one of them a shot if you’re so inclined! It’s also good to know that one of these methods won’t be available at launch.

Let’s get that one out of the way first. If you use Pokémon Home — which won’t be compatible with Scarlet and Violet until Spring 2023 — you can take advantage of its features to effectively save scum. In this method, you’d start a new game in Scarlet or Violet, pick a starter, send said starter to your Home in Pokémon Home, then reset the save / restart the game. If you do this a total of three times, you’ll be able to claim not only Sprigatito, but also Fuecoco and Quaxly. But, as we said, this method won’t be possible until Pokémon Home is made compatible with Scarlet and Violet.

But, one method that is possible without use of Pokémon Home is by co-operating with a friend! If you have a friend who has their own copy of the game (and their own switch), you can trade with them! This method is a little less reliable since your friend must also be willing to trade their starter with you. For those of you who’ve purchased both Scarlet and Violet, you could just … trade with yourself?

In either case, as of this writing, these look to be the sole methods of acquiring all three starters. But, if other methods are revealed, we’ll update this page accordingly. So, keep checking back!
