Google announced that it would be shutting down its cloud gaming service Google Stadia. The service was first established in 2019 and since then had constantly been criticized for requiring players to pay for the games in addition to paying for the service. With the service now closing in January 2023, all of the purchases made by players including games and DLC can be refunded. In this guide, you’ll learn how the refund process works.
What is Eligible for a Refund?
Google announced that all games on Stadia as well as DLC and hardware would be eligible for a refund. If you’d like a refund on your Stadia controller, you won’t have to return it in order to receive a refund. What you should be aware of is the refund depends on where you made your purchase. If you bought your controller or Stadia “Play and Watch” package from a store like Walmart or Best Buy, you won’t receive a refund. Only items purchased directly through an online Google store will. Stadia Pro Membership will not be eligible for a refund but it will be free for the last few months. All new game pre-orders will also be refunded and canceled.
How to Get a Refund on Google Stadia
From the way Google has described the refund process, it will be automatic. They’ve specifically asked people not to contact their support hotline about refunds. Make sure to check what payment method was used to make the purchases in the first place. This is where you’ll probably get the refund. It could take much longer if the payment method is no longer valid or if you live outside of America. All refunds are expected to be complete by January 2023.
