Minecraft is more than a game of building and crafting. There is adventure on the high seas! You can live out any pirate fantasies you may hold and hunt for shipwrecks and buried treasure, to reap the exclusive spoils of the seas. If you have found yourself with a map, or want to find one, then you can follow this guide on how to find buried treasure in Minecraft.
How to locate Buried Treasure in Minecraft
Finding the map
To find hidden buried treasure, you’ll first need to find its map. Getting your hands on one of these may prove difficult, as their only hiding place is within ancient shipwrecks.
Shipwrecks may be found bobbing on the surface of the ocean, or sunken to the depths of the sea. You’ll need your own boat to go sailing into the horizon to locate one the shipwrecks. But once you have, you can search it for chests.
Make sure to have some sort of water-breathing aid, be it a potion or an enchantment. There may be more than one chest on board, so explore it thoroughly!
Once you’ve located one, waste no time in resurfacing and opening it up.

Hunting for treasure
With the map in your possession, all you have to do now is find the treasure.
The buried treasure will be pinpointed on the map through a red ‘X’. You will most likely be off the side of the map, indicated by a white circle. The closer you are, the bigger the dot will be. Use that as an indicator of how much supplies to bring when you’re on your adventure.
Keep moving towards the map’s borders. Due to the small size of the map, you will start filling it in before your pip even shows up on the map. Make your way towards the X.
Now is the difficult part. I hoped you brought a few shovels, as you may be digging a lot of blocks.
The buried treasure itself will consist of a chest full of goodies. It will most likely generate under a sand block under the beach’s surface. However, it may generate just under the sea floor, under a gravel or sand block. Rare circumstances may get it to spawn under stone.
Additionally, please try not to start digging around the X. The chest will be directly under the X, so keep your digging targeted and focused.
