Zack is an NPC in the game, and he’s the guy you can talk to for a Fishing Rod. You can find him in his house, Zack’s House, on the eastern coast of the map next to the pier. Walk inside his house and talk to him. He’ll let you know an old buddy of his moved out and left his Fishing Rod behind. Zack’s not a fisherman, so he figures you might make better use out of it.

As a note, Zack’s house is open between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm every day. All you need to do is speak with him to get the Fishing Rod. Once you get it, equip the rod and press the Tool Button to cast the fishing line. When you cast the line, wait for a fish to bite by keeping an eye on the bobber. Press the Tool Button to reel it in.

If the fish escapes, wait for another one to come along and take a bit. It may take you a few tries to get the timing right, but you can do it! If you are not getting any bites, try a new location. Some spots don’t have a lot of fish swimming around. The type of fish you catch depends on where you fish and the season. Mix up your fishing spots, and you could find some rare items and fish!
