I’ve watched enough sci-fi horror movies to know that futzing with the boundaries of reality is probably a bad idea. You try to bring a chunk of another dimension to ours, you expose ours to all kinds of nastiness. Of course, in a Minecraft world, such nastiness can be easily mopped up, so I guess it’s okay. Here’s how to create a Nether Reactor in Minecraft PE.
How to Create a Nether Reactor in Minecraft PE
The Nether Reactor is a special construct in Minecraft PE that, in a nutshell, allows you to generate an isolated instance of the Nether within the overworld, including all of the blocks, items, and mobs, that spawn within it. It’s both a handy way to get at Nether resources without having to enter the actual Nether, and a nifty device besides. The only catch is that you can only use it for a couple of minutes, after which the Nether instance collapses into a giant chunk of Netherrack.

Before we get into the how-to here, an important clarification: the Nether Reactor was originally added to Minecraft PE because you couldn’t go into the actual Nether. That feature has since been added to the game, and the Nether Reactor removed. You can’t build one in vanilla Minecraft PE, but you can restore it through the use of mods and external tools.
Building the Nether Reactor
To create a Nether Reactor, you’re going to need the following materials:
- 14 Cobblestone
- 36 Gold Ingots
- 6 Iron Ingots
- 3 Diamonds
Start by crafting the Gold Ingots into 4 Gold Blocks. You can do this by just filling an entire crafting grid with 9 Gold Ingots. After that, arrange 3 Iron Ingots, 3 Diamonds, and 3 Iron Ingots in three vertical lines on the crafting Grid to create the Nether Reactor Core. It should look like this:
This is the most important part, as it’s what generates the Nether spiral, which contains the Nether instance.
Once you’ve got your materials, it’s time to assemble the Nether Reactor. Create a 3×3 square on the ground using the Cobblestone and Gold Bricks, with the Gold Bricks placed on the diagonal points. Stack 1 piece of Cobblestone atop each Gold Brick, then place the Nether Reactor Core in the center. Stack 5 more pieces of Cobblestone atop the Core in a cross shape. It should look like a little igloo when it’s done.
One word of warning: make sure you build this thing somewhere out in the open, as when it’s activated, the ensuing Nether spiral will destroy anything directly above it. If you’ve got it somewhere you want it, go ahead and give the Nether Reactor Core a poke to activate it.
Activating the Nether Reactor
When the Nether Reactor is activated, the Cobblestone blocks will transform into Netherite, and you’ll be in the center of the Nether instance, full of goodies like Glowstone and Nether Quartz, as well as mobs like Zombie Pigmen. Gather up as much stuff as you possibly can until the Nether Reactor expires, at which point the Nether spiral will transform into a giant chunk of inert Netherrack.
Once the Nether Reactor expires, you can’t use it again. If you want to generate another Nether spiral, you’ll need to construct another Nether Reactor. The big chunk of Netherrack does look pretty cool in the middle of nowhere, though.
