The Oregon Trail, Gameloft’s updated rerelease of the edutainment classic, leans further into the narrative aspects of the game that were briefly sketched out in prior editions. Your team of four settlers has personality traits and a number of skills that set them apart from each other, and numerous quest chains along the Trail mean that your settlers can meet others and play parts in multiple stories along the trek.
One of these stories is “Two Lovers,” (or “Star-Crossed Lovers,” as the quest is noted in game) a story of true love, arranged marriage, and perilous elopement that spans several arcs along the Trail. Much like navigating the trail itself, it always helps to have a guide, so here’s how to ensure the two lovers Ava and Douglas make it safely to Fort Bridger:
Independence Day
To get the quest to fire, you need to start off in Independence. While you’re there, talk to Douglas, who mentions a woman named Ava heading to Oregon with her family. Without talking to Douglas, the quest refuses to fire. Ask Douglas about Ava, and he’ll wax lyrical about his lady love, telling you she’s further down the trail. Agree to find Ava, and your journal will update with “Star Crossed Lovers.” As with every quest in Oregon Trail, there’s not much you need to do at this point. Just keep hiking down the trail, and eventually you’ll wind up at Alcove Springs, where you’ll finally meet Ava and begin things proper.
Love Springs Eternal
When you get to Alcove Springs, talk to Ava. She’ll tell a similar story to Douglas— she wants to meet the dashing young man she talked to in Independence, but her father wants her to marry a rich banker and connect her family with the other wealthy dynasty. The first thing you should do is tell her you met Douglas, which will drive her further down the trail to find him. Next, you have to choose: Either give her 50 dollars to fund her further journey, or give her 150 pounds of food for supplies. You can also decline, but if you do this, Ava won’t make it to the next location. Once you give her one or the other, keep going down the trail and keep your expedition alive until Fort Kearney.
Snitches Get Stitches
At Fort Kearney, you continue the quest by talking to Harold, Ava’s father. You can do whatever you want here, just do not tell him about Ava. It’s just common sense, his daughter’s eloping behind his back, don’t snitch on Ava and Douglas. However, if you tell him you’ll keep an eye out, then he’ll give you some extra flour to help get you down the trail. Regardless, there’s not much you have to do here other than keep quiet about Ava, unless you’re the kind of jerk who wants to stand in the way of true love for some reason. Your next destination is Independence Rock, just keep going until then.
Reunited And It Feels So Good
At Independence Rock, you meet up with Douglas and Ava. If you talked at all with Ava’s father, do not tell Douglas and Ava you did so. Instead, accept their invitation to the wedding at Fort Bridger. Provided you followed all the steps so far, you should be in perfect position to see the happy couple off to wedded bliss. If not, then you don’t have to worry, you won’t see Douglas and Ava again. If you want to see the end of the quest, though, all you have to do is just continue on to Fort Bridger and hope for the best along the way.
A Happy Ending
At Fort Bridger, there’s nothing more you have to do. Attend the wedding with the happy couple, and then accept your congratulations. Ava and Douglas will happily continue on their way. You successfully dodged the angry father, the lovers reunited, and all that remains is for you to continue down the Trail, hoping to make it to Oregon with all your limbs (mostly) intact. Thanks to your efforts, love won. Even if the trail claims your stalwart settlers, at least you left a lasting impression.
