League of Legends is an incredibly popular multiplayer online battle arena, or MOBA. It only makes sense that some players — regardless of location — would want to change the language in their version of the game. If some players feel more comfortable playing in a particular language, they should be allowed to do so.
Here’s how to change the language setting in League of Legends to Japanese and other languages.
How to Change League of Legends Voice
Alas, the League of Legends client limits users to play in their region’s most popular languages. This means that, if you’re on the North American server, the client won’t let you play in Japanese, and vis versa. But, not all hope is lost! If you’re willing to dive into the game’s files, you can trick the game into letting you play in another language. It should be noted, however, that following this guide will result in you going against the RIOT terms of service.
Before attempting ANY of these options, please be aware that every user’s experience differs. If you aren’t experienced in data mining or changing game files, PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THESE OPTIONS.
If you’re still with us, then let’s start with the easier option.
Changing the Language — Option #1
To change the language in League of Legends through the client file, follow these steps:
- Open the installation directory for League of Legends. By default, it will be at C:/Riot Games/League of Legends.
- Right-click on the League of Legends .exe file.
- Send a copy of the .exe file to your DESKTOP.
- Right-click the copy that you just moved to your Desktop. Select PROPERTIES.
- In the field marked TARGET, add the following text: –locale=XXXXX, where the XXXXX corresponds to whatever language you’d like to play in.
- Here is a complete list of language codes:
- ja_JP: Japanese
- ko_KR: Korean
- zh_CN: Chinese
- zh_TW: Taiwanese
- es_ES: Spanish (Spain)
- es_MX: Spanish (Latin America)
- en_US: English (alternatives en_GB, en_AU)
- fr_FR: French
- de_DE: German
- it_IT: Italian
- pl_PL: Polish
- ro_RO: Romanian
- el_GR: Greek
- pt_BR: Portuguese
- hu_HU: Hungarian
- ru_RU: Russian
- tr_TR: Turkish
- Here is a complete list of language codes:
- Go to the GENERAL tab.
- Check READ-ONLY.
- ACCEPT all changes.
If you need to change the language back for whatever reason, you can do so via the client itself.
Changing the Language — Option #2
If option #1 doesn’t work, here’s another method:
- Open the installation directory for League of Legends. By default, it will be at C:/Riot Games/League of Legends.
- Open CONFIG.
- Right-click on the LeagueClientSettings.yaml file. Select EDIT IN NOTEPAD.
- Locate line beginning with “locale:” You will then notice a language code and region.
- Change the code using the list provided in option #1.
- SAVE changes.
- Return to the installation directory.
- Follow the instructions from option #1 from here.
- If successful, the game should display in your language when you open the DESKTOP copy of League of Legends.
If neither of these options are successful in your specific case, we recommend taking the above-ground method, which involves transferring your account to a different region’s server.
How to Transfer to a Different Region’s Server
If you’d like to transfer your account to a different region’s server, follow these steps:
- Open LEAGUE OF LEGENDS client and sign in.
- Open the store.
- Select ACCESSORIES.
- Locate SERVER TRANSFER.
- Select the desired region server.
