How to Beat the Last Boss in Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course

It's about to get salty in here.

So, you’ve pummeled half of the residents of DLC Isle and pilfered their ingredients for Chef Saltbaker’s Wondertart, all to help Ms. Chalice return to life. Except hey, guess what? Chef Saltbaker is evil and wants to bake one of your friends’ souls into his Wondertart so he can gain unprecedented control over the Astral Realm. And you just gave him everything he needs to do that. Whoops. Time to clean up this kitchen! Here’s how to beat the last boss in Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course.

Chef Saltbaker is a four-phase fight, and whoa boy is it a doozy. There’s gonna be a lot of projectiles flying at you for the first two phases, and even after that, you’re going to want to be highly aware of your footing. As such, a homing weapon like the Crackshot is absolutely vital here, something you can just keep firing while you focus on dodging. Keep something strong like Spread or Charge in reserve for when you have a moment to deal extra damage.

For Charms, you’re definitely going to want to pack the Astral Cookie. Ms. Chalice’s enhanced movement abilities, especially her double jump, will make the last phase a lot easier, and the vertical shot of her first Super can get a lot more usage than Cuphead or Mugman’s.

Phase One: On the Chopping Block

From the moment things get started, Saltbaker is going to come at you hard and fast. He’ll pull out one of the ingredients you brought him and throw them at you across the counter. The limes will boomerang across the counter in one of three elevations, the sugar cubes will bounce across the counter, the strawberries will rain down on you diagonally, and the cookie dough will jump across the counter a little more slowly and deliberately than the sugar (you can shoot the cookies away, though). Also, there’s a little fiery dude jumping down at you from the ceiling.

It’s a lot to take in, especially while trying to shoot at Saltbaker, so just start firing off homing shots in his general direction as you concentrate on not dying. You should make liberal use of Ms. Chalice’s invincible dodge roll for avoiding any ground-based attacks.

Phase Two: The World in the Palm of his Hand

When Saltbaker has had enough of you, he’ll grow to gigantic size and hold you in the palm of his hand. He’ll summon up four pepper shakers in the corners of the screen, which will each launch projectiles at you, while the fiery dude is still bouncing around. Saltbaker will also drop some mint leaves from the top of the screen, which will float down in lines of four.

You can’t attack Saltbaker directly in this phase. Instead, you need to attack his pepper shakers, which will fly into his face when they take enough damage. This is a good time to switch to your strong weapon, as their rate of fire isn’t as high as Saltbaker himself in the previous phase, giving you some breathing room. If you’ve got a Super ready, you can also pop that between two shakers to get two hits at once, though you might also want to save that super until the next phase.

Phase Three: All These Flavors and He Chooses to be Salty

When he takes enough blows to the head, Saltbaker’s body will shatter, unleashing an entire salty subdimension. A pair of salty puppets will emerge and start bouncing around the stage, while a small buzz saw thing rolls around on the floor.

This is a short phase, so no need to get fancy with it. If you’ve still got that Super banked, use it on the puppets now. After that, switch back to your homing weapon and just fire off a few shots until they collapse.

Phase Four: The Heart of the Matter

Saltbaker’s heart will emerge from the salty wastes and twist up a pair of tornadoes on the sides of the screen. The floor will collapse and platforms will start falling from the ceiling; get on one right away so you don’t fall. The heart will start bouncing between the tornadoes as platforms continue to fall.

This is where Ms. Chalice really shines; her double jump can give you a little extra maneuverability, which is helpful because the platforms can fall really far apart from each other. You can also parry the heart while it’s pink, so don’t be afraid to use the parry dash if it’s close by to get some extra elevation. Beyond that, just keep firing off your homing weapon while you stay on the platforms, and soon enough, Saltbaker’s heart will break.

Congratulations, you’ve beaten the last boss of Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course! Saltbaker is off to do some community service for nearly destroying the fabric of reality, and now you can take Ms. Chalice to fight some of the other bosses for fun.
