How the Combat System Works in Hogwarts Legacy

Show us what you got.

Combat in games is the most important part. Well, at least for games that have combat in them, not you Sims franchise. Anyway, being able to tune and bring forth a decently crafted combat system that isn’t boring due to its simplicity or overwhelming due to its complexity. Balance, like Thanos would say, is what all games should aspire to achieve. And well, I believe they have hit the jackpot with this one. Here is how the combat system works in Hogwarts Legacy.

How the Combat System Works

You will be happy to know that the combat system in Hogwarts Legacy is not rocket science. That is, overly complicated. Quite the contrary, it is very straightforward. You will have at your disposal more than 26 different spells (both offensive and defensive), that will be assigned to what is called the Spell Diamond. You will need to press and hold the mapped key or button in order to bring up the spells and select one of the four that have been chosen to be cast. For example, in PlayStation, you will press and hold R2 and then either pick Triangle, Circle, Cross, or Square to cast a specific spell. However, there are standard spells that do not have any cooldown whatsoever. You just have to spam the R2 key, in the case of the PlayStation, in order to cast them.

The standard spells will have a cooldown period in order for you to cast them again. The cooldown time will depend upon how big of a spell. In order to keep things more streamlined, you will be able to have the ability to have four Spell Diamonds in total. This will amount to 16 spells that you will get to select to be part of your arsenal. This will be determined and guided by the game, based on the color scheme of the spell and its effect it could have on other spells, such as defensive ones. You will also get to combine spells that will fill up a combo bar that will lead you to perform a finisher move.

You will be able to dodge or protect yourself by using defensive spells such as Protego. Not only that, but you can even deflect incoming spells or even perform a counter-attack. You will do this pressing the corresponding button or key. Just wait for the yellow circle floating on top of your head to appear. Furthermore, you will be able to use other tools, potions, or even magical creatures that will aid you in battle. This can potentially give you a tactical advantage and bring a lot of variation to the game.

And that’s pretty much it! I hope I didn’t overcomplicate things with my words, but rest assured that, even if I did, things are much simpler than they appear. You will have to learn how the combat system works by yourself, of course. However, that doesn’t mean that it will take you a while. Just be patient and become the best wizard the world has seen! Except for the legendary ones, you know, Dumbledore, Tom Riddle, even Harry Potter at time. Well, good luck then!
