How Often Does Mojang Update Minecraft?

Going back to basics

The updates of Minecraft recently have been a little controversial (*ahem*… Caves and Cliffs…). However, with a recent statement, that may all be about to change. We have gotten used to large, annual themed updates that overhaul a certain aspect of the game. We have seen this with updates such as: Update Aquatic, Caves and Cliffs, the Wild Update, not to mention many others. And although those updates have been huge, in recent years they have been a little problematic.

There have been two main problems with the annual updates as of recent years. Caves and Cliffs was split into three parts, and so was victim to the ‘overpromise and underachieve’ trap from the get-go, which thoroughly disappointed fans. Additionally, the Wild Update was not deemed ‘wild enough’ by the community, which the devs have picked up on. So on a technical and thematic standpoint, Mojang has been underperforming. So what is the latest strategy?

Mojang’s new update release schedule

From the 1.19.3 update, Minecraft will now benefit from numerous, smaller updates per year that will include smaller improvements and bug fixes that the team deem ready to publish. And that is on top of the annual, themes updates the community has gotten used to. This will help Minecraft in many, many ways.

Firstly, it means more content for the likes of us to enjoy throughout the year, so we don’t have to wait entire years (and possibly longer) to receive the content we’ve been promised.

Secondly, the workers and developers at Mojang will now be able to work on content at different paces, ensuring a positive working environment which will result in polished, finished content. Without the stresses of everything going towards the one, annual update, they can now look to finishing things for the smaller installations to then work of the larger, more anticipated update.

Thirdly, it will be easier to stick to a solid theme for the annual update as the outlier content will have already been released that year. The Wild Update could have more ‘wild’ if the all the anomalous content was released outside of the Wild Update.

We can now look forwards to this new policy, as it looks promising for the producers and the consumers.
