Overwatch 2 saw a complete overhaul of how its competitive ranked system works. Initially confusing but still completely secretive in terms of how exactly it functions, there are many noticeable factors in how exactly a player ranks in Overwatch 2. Here is everything to keep in mind when climbing competitively in the game.
How Does Overwatch 2 Determine Rank? Explained
In Overwatch 2, players are required to win either 7 games or lose/tie 20 times to see a change in their ranked position. Depending on which is reached first, players will see an increase or decrease in their ranking position. This may very well increase well over two positions or plummet below two spots – this is seemingly dependent on the outcome of the matches.
Do keep in mind that each rank tier go in the order of the following:
- Bronze – 5 to 1
- Silver – 5 to 1
- Gold – 5 to 1
- Platinum – 5 to 1
- Diamond – 5 to 1
- Master – 5 to 1
- Grandmaster – 5 to 1
- Top 500
Like any online game with a competitive mode, Overwatch 2 is run on a hidden MMR (matchmaking rank) system. This will constantly change depending on the amount of wins or losses you accumulate in one go. It is a known feature that rank decay will occur if players are inactive on the game for a certain period of time.
In the end, Activision Blizzard have not gone into detail in how determining player rank is exactly calculated. So, while the true nature of what exactly is considered when settling on a group and band in the game is considered, individual performance may very well be an involved element. This could also depend on the average stats one would get for aspects of the game such as role, match time and meeting objective requirements.
