Everyone knows for Fire Emblem permadeath is one of the key features of the wildly popular tactical RPG. It can be quite frustrating, challenging, and rewarding all at once. Permadeath once again rears its head in Fire Emblem Engage but it’s not part of every aspect of the game. You will have a chance to play the game without it, so there is good news for less hardcore gamers. However, you want to know when it happens and how to deal with it. Here’s when permadeath starts in Fire Emblem Engage.

When Permadeath Starts
There are two modes in Fire Emblem Engage: Classic and Casual. Casual is as it sounds, an easier and less difficult mode. This is for players who just want to enjoy the game and play it with minimum stress. Classic is the harder difficulty. This is the only mode that has permadeath in Engage.
So the question is less of a “when” and “what” has permadeath. Permadeath is only in Classic so it’s safe to say if you have that mode on, permadeath is happening the whole time. That is to say, permadeath really is… permanent. So if you’re newer to Fire Emblem or don’t want to deal with permadeath, go with casual mode first.

How to deal with Permadeath
For some quick tips on how to deal with permadeath here are some pointers. Be sure to use the rewind mechanic that almost every Fire Emblem game has. If you realize you’ve made a few choice mistakes it can help you from losing your unit in battle.
Also, be sure to save before every encounter. No shame in just turning the game off when you lose and trying again! There are also in-game features and items that might revive the unit you lost somewhere down the line.
