Does Loot Respawn in Project Zomboid?

No. In fact, Project Zomboid takes more of a real-world approach to hunting loot. To that end, containers’ contents are locked in as soon as they’re generated into the world. And then, when you open a container, any items you don’t take will remain. If they’re foodstuffs, they’ll eventually rot, so your best bet is to take whatever you can find. Beggars can’t be choosers when your next meal could be days away!

But — if you’re looking for a more traditional, less survival-intensive experience, you can change this! In the Game Options, when you’re creating a new world, pick CUSTOM SANDBOX. If you do this, you’ll be able to change various settings within the new game, including whether or not loot respawns. In fact, the available options for renewable loot include:

  • None — the default option, loot will never respawn.
  • Every Day — loot will respawn each in-game day.
  • Every Week — loot will respawn every seven in-game days.
  • Every Month — loot will respawn every 30 in-game days.
  • Every 2 Months — loot will respawn every 60 in-game days.
