Advantages to Playing China in Civ VI

Under all of China’s leaders, China has a specific civilization ability to keep in mind: Dynastic Cycle. Whenever China completes a Wonder, they get a free Inspiration and Eureka. They also get:

  • An additional 10 percent of the cost of civics
  • An additional 10 percent of the cost of technologies

Given this strategy, Wonder-building is vital to your success in the game as any ruler of China. During the ancient and classical eras in particular, you must rush the production of as many Wonders as you can for a strong early game. Consider using policy cards that will benefit Wonder construction, especially in early game.

Let’s take a look at how that works for each new leader.

Best Yongle Strategy

Yongle has an amazing ability called Lijia, which you can exploit fiercely, especially early game. Lijia is available immediately, and it lets you construct special projects in each city. Through those projects, you can increase food, faith, production, and gold yields significantly.

However, once your city reaches ten population, Lijia permits an extra science and an extra culture in that city. You also get two additional gold in the city!

The best strategy for Yongle is to build large cities fast. Do whatever you must to reach a population of 10 in each city. The Reyna and Pingala governors should be your first appointments, as their abilities complement a build-to-ten strategy.

Qin Shi Huang the Unifier Strategy

Qin comes with a lovely bonus for builders: they one extra build charge. Plus, you can expend a build charge to contribute 15% to a Wonder.

Open with Governor Liang to get the extra build charge and you’ll increase your productivity and expand your borders quickly while building Wonders. If you add the policy card that enables an extra charge over that, builders get six charges.

Here’s the kicker: With China, whenever a builder expends a charge, a percentage kicks back to Wonder building. Use builders frequently and the Wonders practically build themselves. Because this isn’t tied to a specific city, you can get a strong early game advantage with this simple strategy.

Wu Zetian

The consummate spymaster, Wu Zetian gets science and culture bonuses when her spies complete successful missions. Treat your spies as you would traders when you’re playing as Wu: build them as soon as possible, and always keep them active. Choose targets that will result in success to get those bonuses frequently. This stacks with China’s Dynastic Cycle bonuses.

To win as Wu Zetian, steal cultural works, go for a cultural victory, and build the great wall.

Regardless of which leader you choose, the China bonuses are fantastic. This is the ideal Civ for anyone who likes to focus on Wonders.
