Can You Save the Dog in Resident Evil 4 Remake?

A man's best friend.

There’s something about a dog that makes it especially tragic when one dies in a movie or video game. (Unless it’s a zombie dog, they can go jump off a cliff). Just look at John Wick for instance. Audiences have cheered as the former hitman takes down hundreds of people across the series. All because John’s puppy was murdered. In the Resident Evil franchise, there are not many alive dogs, much less ones that can tug at the heartstrings.

But the original Resident Evil 4 featured a dog caught in a trap, early in the game. Players have the option of rescuing the dog, which later returns the favor. Can you rescue the dog in Resident Evil 4 Remake?

Can You Save the Dog in Resident Evil 4 Remake?

The answer is yes and no. Early in the game of Resident Evil 4 Remake, Leon comes across a dog in a bear trap. But this time, the dog is dead, and there’s nothing that Leon can do to save it. Find a box of tissues because this is traumatic for original players and sets a darker tone for the game. However, Capcom apparently realized how devastating this was because Leon can actually save another dog later in the game.

Similar to the original, this dog is too caught in a bear trap. In Chapter 3, players will hear a dog whimpering, which will lead them to a garden behind the house. You have to be careful here because there are several bear traps. But Leon will find a dog caught in one, much like he did in the original game. Players will then have an option of saving the dog or not.

Should You Save the Dog?

What kind of monster are you if you wouldn’t? There’s absolutely no negative for saving the dog. It doesn’t later turn into a zombie dog (as so many did before in the series) or try to attack you. In fact, saving the dog will help you out during a crucial moment in the game. Similar to the original, the dog will return to aid Leon.

While fighting against El Gigante, the dog will distract the boss and give Leon a much-needed break. If you didn’t save the dog, then you will find this boss battle much tougher on both your health and resources. It proves once again that sometimes a good deed does pay off.
