Dark and Darker is one interesting RPG game that has unexpectedly caught a lot of attention recently. Even though still in the development phase and only has playtests every few months, people are hooked on this video-game DnD experience.
Since the playtest has been present on the PC alone, some players have wondered how they can play this game via a controller. We dug into this and here’s what we’ve found.

Playing Dark and Darker with a Controller
Fans of controllers and Steam Deck have been looking all over the internet for information about whether Dark and Darker will work on that platform or with the joystick controller. In short, Dark and Darker will work with Steam Deck and controllers but might experience some issues since neither is officially supported.
Players using controllers reported that they were able to play the game but some in-game mechanics weren’t working well, like looting. Steam Deck users had a similar experience as they were able to run the game on their consoles even with 50 FPS when lowering some graphics settings but still noticed that controls weren’t optimized for the game fully.
Since experiences weren’t exactly the same for every person, we recommend trying to play with the controller yourself and seeing how things feel like and what things you can and can not do. If so happens that you are having trouble with the controller itself, make sure to check if there are any driver updates for it available, and sometimes even simply unplugging the keyboard and mouse while having a controller plugged in helps.
In the end, perhaps it’s too early for us to expect that the game is fully optimized for controller gameplay since it’s still in the alpha stage and is expected to be released somewhere between October and December 2023.
