Can Pre-Evolution Moves be Transferred in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

Make the most of your moves

One of the biggest features in any Pokémon game is the ability to create the perfect movesets for your team. The right moves can mean the difference between victory or defeat, especially in higher-level battles. That’s why most Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players are searching for a way to epitomize their Pokémon aside from IVs and behaviors. One aspect that’s challenging is moves between evolutions of Pokémon. Just because a previous evolution is able to learn a specific move does not mean its further evolutions can. Nothing is more frustrating to a player than learning these moves can’t transfer.

We’ll answer a simple question: can pre-evolution move be transferred to later generations?

Can moves transfer?

The answer to that question is relatively simple, as long as players know what they’re doing. By itself, moves that are not part of a Pokémon’s move list can be lost if replaced by another move. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead before evolving your Pokémon. Trainers should make sure that their Pokémon have the moves they desire right before evolution. That way, when the Pokémon evolves, the moves will transfer over to the new evolution.

A word of caution, once this is done, players should consider the Pokémon’s moves locked in. From this point on, should the player replace a move that the current evolution can not learn, it’s as good as gone. There will be no way to recover that move other than a small chance with breeding or finding a whole new Pokémon to evolve
