Life is Strange: True Colors

Starting off our list with one of 2021’s best titles to release, the RPG title Life is Strange: True Colors. In True Colors, the main character, Alex Chen is a strong bisexual woman whose dealt with a lot in life. Along the game’s story, Alex becomes friends with several characters throughout the town she now lives. Two of these characters can be romanced, allowing Alex to be with the hunky towny boy Ryan Lucan or the coolest drummer in town, Steph Gingrich. Each love interest choice impacts the ending greatly and is very exciting to play through.

Non-Binary

If you’re looking for an abstract take on gameplay, then Non-Binary would be a good choice. Non-Binary is both parts a visual novel and a bullet hell, that puts players in the middle of the action at all times. The game also features two stories to play, either of which is randomly chosen for your first playthrough.

Hades

If you’re really only looking to engage in some heavy combat, then there’s no doubt that Hades should be what you’re looking for. Playing as Hades’ own son, Zagreus, you’ll not only battle some fierce foes but meet some of his past lovers. A snarky, charming character, Zagreus is not only the Prince of the Underworld but a strong bisexual character who takes pride in who he is.

No Longer Home

No Longer Home is both parts a lite RPG and a puzzle game of sorts. It is a coming-of-age tale about two Non-Binary roommates/lovers that are forced to realize that their paths may no longer be going in the same direction. It’s a calming, stress-free title worth a play.

Celeste

If you’re a puzzle-platforming enthusiast, then Celeste needs to be on your list for the next game to play. It has no combat and instead focuses on precise movement in order for players to win. The visuals are also gorgeous and the game features a deep story about being trans and overcoming your trauma. I wish there were a sequel.

The Big Con

The Big Con is a title that seems to slip under most folks’ radar but it most certainly is a queer title. The game’s main character, Ali, throughout the game, is hinted at as being queer but is solidified by the end as a lesbian. This is another cozy game as players interact with the world similarly to those point-and-click games of the late 90s, the era that inspired the look and feels of it.

If Found…

One of the deepest stories on this list, If Found… is a tale about a trans woman in Ireland back in the 1990s. It’s told as a visual novel, with players erasing the pages as the story unfolds. This title definitely has a lot of moments that will resonate with trans players, as it does not hold back on including some heavy subject matter that we know all too well. But it’s most definitely worth a try, and a cry.

Tell Me Why

another title that includes a trans main character, Tell Me Why is another RPG title that falls in the same vein as Life is Strange, though the story is somehow even more mature and oftentimes bleak. This title really doesn’t get enough praise, as it’s a fantastic narrative overall, and one of the only games out there that features a main trans character that’s fully voiced throughout, by a trans actor (August Aiden Black).
