Best Characters for Beginners in Eternal Return

The arena calls your name

Exited from Early Access, Eternal Return has landed in the hands of the Battle Royale fanbase. As players log in to become the sole survivor in the arena, Eternal Return transforms their Modes indefinitely for its full release. No longer will you be playing in Solos or Duos for this Battle Royale game. Instead, players will have to accommodate for other players, be it friends or strangers. With this change that could become permanent (although other Game Modes are suggested to be delayed), players are having to adjust their playstyle due to the balancing of pre-existing characters. Whether you are returning to the game after being a player in Early Access or are brand new to the game, this is Vincent’s guide on the best characters to use for beginners in Eternal Return.

Beginner’s Character Guide in Eternal Return

Due to its fantastical setting, the characters of Eternal Return follow a similar formula to that of Apex Legends in that they are divided by a class system. Players will be able to choose between Assassins, Fighters (Juggernauts and Duelists), Mages, Marksman and Supports. Each character has their unique weapons and skill set that will determine who you want to play as. Whilst a lot of players have preference for character aesthetics, the importance in Battle Royale games such as Eternal Return or other ability-based games such as Overwatch is that the decision comes solely down to the character’s playstyle.

Now that the overall character skill sets have been balanced out to make a more fair experience for players across the board, it is best to then look at the range of a character’s weapons and abilities and how they fit into your desired playstyle. If you have experience in Battle Royale or ability-based games prior to Eternal Return, you will already know what kind of playstyle you wish to adopt in this game. Anything is viable in this game so long as you acknowledge that team compositions and cater towards a team dynamic that has a range of character abilities and playstyles to deal with any situation that may arise in a match of Eternal Return.

Best Starting Characters in Eternal Return

With all this in mind, our recommendations are based on characters that will quickly teach you the ins-and-outs of Eternal Return. So, we recommend these specific characters to use for beginners, in order of easiest to learn to hardest:

  • Leon (Fighter) – For brand new players that are not used to ability-based games or the intensity of a Battle Royale, Leon has a simple move set that is transferable across action games. Therefore, he is the best pick for those trying out Eternal Return for the first time and coming from games such as Call of Duty, Overwatch or Diablo.
  • Ava (Mage) – Great for players who are just getting into action games. Positioning is key with this character and it is completely fine to run away from a fight to use her move set from afar as this is what Ava asks of you. This is best for the more passive players who may be used to games such as Valorant.
  • Jackie (Duelist) – Jackie is the player for those who typically main characters such as Sombra and Tracer on Overwatch, Jet on Valorant or Wraith on Apex Legends. She acts as a character who plays more as a solo looking for kills. She is great as a character on her own where her team can support her rather than Jackie having to support her team. Her move set is incredibly close-quarters and should only be played for those who like aggressive playstyles.
  • Rio (Marksman) – Rio is here for all of the Windowmaker and Hanzo mains. She offers agility whilst having the move set to adopt two methods of attacking from a fast action bow to a longer ranged attacking playstyle so that you can get in entrance damage and move in with team to take out the enemy. Her agility allows you to jump over obstacles and quickly reposition.
  • Bianca (Assassin) – Although Bianca is the hardest to master on this list, we recommend this Assassin for those who are used to dabbling with combos and magic. Bianca has the ability to quickly move around the map but her move set comes at a price of skills costing her own health in order to use. You can gain this back however through using her moves on enemies, but her strengths lie in hitting critical shots. So if you are someone who enjoys combo hitting, Bianca is the one for you.

We hope this guide was helpful when choosing who to play as in Eternal Return for beginners. For more on the latest video game coverage, be sure to see our new and regularly updated GJ guide section here.
