High quality voice acting performances are the lifeblood of the Portal games, from the faintly sinister monotone of Ellen McLain as GLaDOS to the bumbling charm of Stephen Merchant as Wheatley. Yes, the puzzle mechanics and setpieces were fantastic, but the voices, man. They were what tied it all together. Even though Valve’s newest creation, Aperture Desk Job, is just a fancy tech demo for the Steam Deck, they don’t do things halfway. They got some very talented people on deck for this one. Here are the voice actors in Aperture Desk Job.
All Voice Actors in Aperture Desk Job
Since Aperture Desk Job is only a 30 minute experience, there’s obviously not that much room for a lot of performances. This is why, instead of having a whole laundry list of people you’ll immediately forget about, they got exactly three people to voice the whole thing:
- Nate Bargatze
- J.K. Simmons
- Debra Wilson
Grady – Nate Bargatze
In the role of workhorse personality core and player companion Grady, we have Nate Bargatze. While Bargatze only has a handful of acting credits to his name, he’s still a fairly big name in the entertainment circuit, working primarily as a comedian. He’s both a writer and a regular personality on Comedy Central Presents, he’s had multiple stand-up specials on Netflix, and he’s a regular face on the nighttime talk circuit, appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and more.
Cave Johnson – J.K. Simmons
Once again reprising his role as the lovably eccentric founder and CEO of Aperture Science, Cave Johnson, we have award-winning actor J.K. Simmons. Simmons became a staple of the Portal brand with his first appearance as Cave Johnson in Portal 2, chock full of fast-talking witticisms and meme-able phrases. Of course, he’s also an actor of high renown, with one of his most enduring roles being just about every appearance of disgruntled reporter J. Jonah Jameson in multiple live-action and animated Marvel productions. You may also remember him as Omni-Man in Invincible, Lenny Turtletaub in Bojack Horseman, and Stanford Pines in Gravity Falls.
Prison Warden – Debra Wilson
Let nobody say Valve doesn’t go the extra mile for cameos. Midway through Aperture Desk Job, you end up in prison (play it yourself to find out how), and when you’re released, the warden gives you a few words of encouragement. That warden is actually veteran voice actor Debra Wilson, who has played roles both named and supplementary in games, television, and film since the 90s. Odds are good you’ve heard her voice in at least one production without realizing it, though if you want specifics, she was Shelda in Bugsnax, Grace Walker in Wolfenstein II, and she’s slated to play Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
