The characters have both roles in-game and personalities in their real lives.

The premise of Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds is that a variety of people are invited to test out a new fully-immersive virtual reality video game called “Soul Divers.” Now, considering how many anime and light novel stories involve getting trapped in VR MMOs, I would personally be hesitant to be first on the chopping block for such a thing, but luckily, Cross Worlds’ core cast is a lot braver than me.

Rather than having actual names, each of the five main characters is instead referred to by their character class. Additionally, besides their personas in Soul Divers, they’re also real people with their own motivations for playing the game. The core cast is made up of:

  • Engineer
  • Destroyer
  • Swordsman
  • Witch
  • Rogue

Engineer, the Adorable Sharpshooter

You wouldn’t think being small and cute would be that helpful for gun-based warfare, but hey, being small means there’s less of you to shoot! The Engineer is a skilled markswoman with a trained hand in just about any kind of gun you can think of. Her tinkering prowess also allows her to provide medical support to allies in the heat of a scrape.

Outside of Soul Divers, the Engineer is a high schooler with a certified genius IQ and an absolutely unquenchable thirst for more knowledge. Present someone like that with a fully-immersive VR game, and it’s not surprising she’d be interested.

Destroyer, the Giant Warrior

No fantasy party is complete with a big, burly dude to take hits and strike back twofold. That’s the Destroyer’s job to a tee; shield the team from the brunt of the enemy offensive, then punish them with massive melee weapons.

Despite what his intimidating persona may imply, the Destroyer’s actually a big teddy bear. In real life, he owns and operates a local flower shop, and his favorite thing in the world is seeing his bouquets give others a big smile.

Swordsman, the Heroic Fencer

It’s not a fantasy party until the hero takes the stage. The Swordsman is your picturesque RPG hero, swinging a short sword with unparalleled skill while his cape billows in the wind. His sword skill is so prodigious, that his foes can’t help but stop and stare.

The Swordsman’s leadership skill in Soul Divers translates to his can-do attitude in his day job as a salaryman. He’s the energetic, go-getting senpai type of worker, joining Soul Divers as a little break from his daily grind.

Witch, the Beautiful Magician

Gone are the days of wrinkly old guys with spellbooks standing on the back lines. The Witch slings spells in the heat of the action, dancing from foe to foe with an almost ephemeral grace. It certainly helps that she’s got an enchanted spear to keep her safe when things get dicey.

In her real life, the Witch is one of those people that make you think “oh yeah, she’s got her life together.” She’s a veritable fountain of talent, tackling whatever life throws at her with little difficulty. In fact, there’s no such thing as “difficulties” in her life, merely “hassles.”

Rogue, the Playful Archer

A battle can’t be fought at melee range alone; you need to have some sprightly folks that know how to stick an arrow where it needs to be at the precise right time. Enter, the Rogue: with his bow, he can fire off precisely targeted arrow volleys to corral and harass foes, while also using his skills to buff and protect his allies.

Outside of Soul Divers, the Rogue is… well, pretty much the same. He’s a young boy with a love of fun and games, not to mention a persistent mischievous streak that makes him predisposed to a bit of good-natured subterfuge. He was basically born to annoy people with projectile weapons.

Join these colorful characters and more in the world of Ni No Kuni: Cross Worlds, and work to protect a world that is much, much more than just another MMO. If you’ve ever felt real camaraderie with an MMO guild, just wait and see what blooms when the fate of an actual fantasy world is at stake!
