For this challenge, you will only have access to the worker ant and the black ant. The enemies that the deranged scientist will throw at you will be simple enough to not pose much of a threat, but regardless, here are all of the things that you need to keep in mind to succeed against the first onslaught. Make sure you have hit all of these to ensure your persistence against the first challenge:

  • At least 750 food is stored.
  • Food storage tiles have been placed at the entrance for swift retrieval of food.
  • You have around 40-45 level 2 or higher black ants. (The more black ants you have, the more food you will want to have stored. Don’t go crazy with the ant numbers!)
  • You black ants and queen have two upgrades – of your choice.
  • Your black ant nursery tiles are located at the entrance to ensure a fast commute to the front line to prevent the enemy from breaching into your nest and threatening your queen.

Once all of the conditions have been met, you will be more than ready to take on the challenge and advance to the next tier.

This second gate challenge is largely similar to its predecessor, it is merely a larger onslaught with stronger and more varied opponents. This time, you will also have the wood ants to join the fight. Make sure this checklist is met before you go inviting the deranged scientist to wreak havoc:

  • At least 1,500 food is stored.
  • Food storage tiles have been placed at the entrance for swift retrieval of food.
  • You have around 40-45 black ants at level 3 and 8-15 wood ants at level 3.
  • It would be heavily recommended to have at least 20 worker ants of at least level 2 to stay near your queen to fend off the spiders and to place eggs on nursery tiles to keep your front line bolstered.
  • All of your ants (soldier and worker) have both of their upgrade slots filled – of your choice.
  • Your nursery tiles for all your offensive ants are located near the entrance to prevent the enemy from breaching your frontline.

Once all of these conditions have been met, you can start you colony’s final fight before the scientists relocate your queen to a new habitat.

A new habitat and a new style of challenge. In this challenge, you have to invade another colony’s nest whilst avoiding the scientist’s sabotage and murder rampage. This time, you will have the might of the giant leaf cutter ants to aid your fight. For this formidable fight, you must adhere to this checklist for a successful battle:

  • At least 2,000 food is stored.
  • Food storage tiles have been placed at the entrance for swift retrieval of food.
  • You have around 25-30 black ants at level 3, 25-30 wood ants at level 3 and 20-25 leaf cutter majors at level 3.
  • It would be heavily recommended to have at least 25 worker ants of at least level 3 to stay near your queen to fend off the spiders and to place eggs on nursery tiles to keep your front line bolstered.
  • All of your ants (soldier and worker) have both of their upgrade slots filled – of your choice.
  • Your nursery tiles for all your offensive ants are located near the entrance to prevent the enemy from breaching your frontline and to ensure a quick jump into the action.

This formicarium challenge, even when you are fully prepared, can still best you if you are not careful enough. It may take a couple tries, but success is definitely within grasp with this set up. Just be careful of those giant hands, and other insects. If you need a tip, then just know that the enemy colony has a food storage just as you do, so try to make them deplete their food stocks and watch them reduce from hordes to trickles.

Follow these guidelines and you’ll be victorious in no time. Don’t have the game and want to try your hand at the challenges? You can download Empires of the Undergrowth on Steam.
