Created by Welsh software engineer and former Reddit employee, Josh Wardle, Wordle has captivated audiences around the globe since the start of the new year. Providing users with a fun yet challenging word game that features thousands of five-letter words that must be guessed correctly in order to move on and improve their score.
Despite there being 158,390 words of five-letter words in the English dictionary, users are curious to know whether Wordle uses words with repeating letters.
So, here is everything you need to know about whether or not Wordle repeats letters.
Does Wordle Repeat Letters?
Part of the reason why Wordle has gained so much traction is that it runs off a fairly easy premise. Simply guess the correct five-letter word in up to six tries and watch your score improve by the day.
After each guess, every letter in the word will be given a color. It will either be highlighted in yellow, which means that the letter is in the word but not where you had placed it. Or it will be highlighted in green which means that it’s in the word and in the correct position. But if a gray square appears then this is to indicate to you that the letter isn’t in the word at all.
Since you only get six tries, it would make sense that you wouldn’t want to waste it on a word with double letters. Although, don’t let this thought deter you because there are actually quite a few words in the Wordle archives that contain repeat letters.
Some examples of Wordles with repeat letters include:
- Allow
- Comma
- Fewer
- Grill
- Natal
- Rally
- Rupee
- Sweet
- Trees
- Trust
This only accounts for a handful of possible words with repeat letters, which is part of what makes this game so challenging, since these letters can either appear next to one another or in non-consecutive order.
That being said, it’s also what allows Wordle to have thousands of five-letter words available to choose from. Fortunately, you won’t have to sift through over a hundred thousand words. Wordle reportedly has 2,315 possible solutions and more than 10,000 possible words allowed as guesses. Even that can be a lot to swallow.
The good news is that the game relies on the formation of five-letter words. This gives you a good idea as to where the double letters could lie within the word. Typical double-letter words will have them featured at the end with words like “Spill”, “Brass”, or “Three”. While others will feature double letters in the middle of two-syllable words such as “Rally”, “Marry”, and “Happy”.
Obviously, this will take some practice before you’re able to master the use of repeat letters in Wordle. But it does get a lot easier over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Wordle Answers be Plural?
While there are tons of Wordles that feature repeat letters, there aren’t too many plural words in Wordle. In fact, there are zero answers that feature plural words at this moment in time. Even though there are a few that end in “S”, they are not technically plural words. So, you can safely avoid plurals in Wordle for the time being, but plural words could pop up in the future.
Does Wordle Use Past Tense Words?
Another common question that has popped up is whether or not Wordle uses past tense words. Similar to plural words, there have not been any indications of past tense words being used in Wordle. However, this doesn’t mean that there won’t be in the future. This is particularly difficult because it’s nearly impossible to know if a word ending in “ed” means that it is past tense. Since this could indicate a word like “Bleed”, “Creed”, “Speed”, etc.
