PlayStation Plus: How to Upgrade Your Service to Extra and Premium

It could be easier than we think.

Sony first launched PlayStation Plus in the Summer of 2010, but the subscription service is getting a facelift to compete against Microsoft’s evergrowing Xbox Game Pass. Sony is offering PlayStation Plus as a three-prong tier system composed of Essential, Extra, and Premium.

For viewers wanting the most perks, here’s how you can upgrade the service.

How to Upgrade Your PlayStation Plus

Sony has been somewhat tight-lipped about how users can change their plan, but we have received confirmation that they can change their plan. We will continue to update this page as more information becomes available.

According to an email purportedly sent by Sony to a user on ResetEra, users can “easily upgrade to a higher benefits plan at any time,” and that to do so, they will “need to pay the difference between [their] current plan and [their] new plan, adjusted for the remaining time of [their] subscription.” It’s not clear as of writing if a similar process will allow users to move to a lower tier.

What’s New for PlayStation Plus?

In March 2022, the new service was detailed via a PlayStation.Blog entry, where Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, detailed the differences between the old and new. It looks like the biggest impact to players will be the brand new service tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium.

Essential seems to be the equivalent of already existing members. Those who choose this tier will receive two monthly downloadable games, exclusive discounts, cloud storage for saved games, and online multiplayer access. It will cost $9.99 monthly, $24.99 quarterly, or $59.99 if paid yearly.

Extra will provide all benefits found in the Essential tier, in addition to a total of 400 PS4 and PS5 games that can be downloaded for play. It will cost $14.99 monthly, $39.99 quarterly, or $99.99 if paid yearly.

Premium will provide all benefits found in the Essential and Extra tiers, in addition to another 340 games, including PS3 games via cloud streaming and a catalog of classic PS1, PS2, and PSP games. Also, this tier will make time-limited game trials available for players to try before they buy. It will cost $17.99 monthly, $49.99 monthly, or $119.99 if paid yearly.
