How to Play Friends vs Friends

Friends vs Friends released in May, 2023. It has already received a ton of positive reviews for being a highly entertaining friendship destroyer. Whilst there is criticism towards its repetitive gameplay and matchmaking, these types of issues are to be expected from a smaller Indie game. For an FPS game, Friends vs Friends has standard combat that you will be used to using at this point, but combines this with a Deck Building elements where players have and obtain cards through playing the game. These provide combat advantages and disadvantages towards the enemy team.

Friends vs Friends is available on Windows and Linux. You can find the Product Page on Steam here. How does the game work? Players head into an arena, playing either a 1v1 or 2v2. You have the option to play strictly with friends, to go into a match against randoms with your friend as your comrade, or to play with and against randoms only. The Deck Building elements accompany the action gameplay where throughout the course of the match you can select any card from your deck to give you an advantage or release a disadvantage against the opposition. You can have healing, weapon, environmental and appearance cards that can either help you personally mid-fight or alter the way the game is played.

Cards are not provided infinitely so you should not use all of your cards within a single round of the match. Instead, be tactical and think about what you truly need or how you can sway the fight in your favor. Your teammate’s name is visible at all times, whilst opponents do not have their name displayed in-game. At the end of every round, 2 cards will be added to your hand. As you start the match with 4 cards, you will want to have more options throughout rather than using everything and going into the next round with 2 new cards. The game ends when a team wins a total of 3 rounds.

The Friendship Destroyer – How to Invite Frenemies into the Game

If you are interested in playing the game with the specific goal to go head-to-head against your greatest of friends, now is the time to do so. As the title suggests, this really is a game that is best played with friends. Whilst you have the opportunity to match up with players from around the world, emphasis is placed on friendship. From the Main Menu, you want to select Private Match. From here you can copy the Private Match Password and give it to your 1-3 friends you wish to play with. Selecting the Invite Friend Button allows you to invite players from your Steam Friends List. You can also set here whether or not you wish to play a straight 1v1 or level out the playing field with a 2v2 (because your friend could use all the help they can get).

Not hosting the game? Just click on the Join Button in the Lobby screen and select your friend’s Lobby from here. You will likely need the Password to get in so be sure that your friend has sent you this. If you are looking to play with randoms, you can select whether or not you want to play a 1v1 or 2v2 which will start the matchmaking process.

How to Level Up in Friends vs Friends

Levelling up in Friends vs Friends is quite simple. It is really just done through playing the game and winning matches. You will earn both Cash and XP by winning games and getting kills. But you can in fact still earn XP and Cash even if you lose. Of course, either getting a considerable amount of kills in the game or winning will give you more rewards, but you do not need to worry about losing as there are still participation rewards.

In the Main Menu you will find a Store Tab as the last icon on the top bar. This is where you can buy new Deck Packs for your cards. From here you can either purchase a Basic Pack or a Gold Pack. The Basic Pack costs 250 Cash whilst the Gold Pack costs 550, with both packs having 4 cards on offer. Whether you purchase or not, your Deck can be built via the Cards Tab in the top bar. You can open your new Booster Packs and adjust your Deck to suit your playstyle and preference on what you wish to prioritize in the next game. Keep in mind that your overall Deck is the same throughout unless you switch cards out under the Deck Building Menu or switch Characters.

Because of the pricing of the Booster Packs, you will need to play a lot of games to earn enough Cash whilst being able to simultaneously Level Up simply by playing through matches.

How to Get New Cosmetic Skins

Cosmetic Items such as Skins or Accessories are also unlocked by playing the game. Friends vs Friends has no Micro Transactions which is great to see for an online game made in 2023. Unlike cards however, the way to purchase new Skins is by obtaining Animal Tokens (looks like an animal head under your Username). You can find Skins under the Character Icon on the top bar, between the Cards and Store Icons. Each Character can be found here, with most being locked at the beginning of the game. As you can see, who you choose to play as can be switched out whenever as they have individual unique base cards, starter weapons and their own Deck to use.

You can get new Characters by progressing through the game and gaining XP by playing matches. Some Characters are unlocked before Level 10, whilst others require more of a grinding playstyle with Level 20 Character Unlocks. On the Character Screen, you can click Change Skin on the bottom-right corner of the screen. The PalPrize Machine also offers a choice between x1 Card Back, Friend Avatar or a Keychain after every match (located outside the Diner). These require the Animal Tokens as currency to use the machine. In Friends vs Friends the Cosmetic Skins are titled Friend Avatar. So when you are looking to get a new Cosmetic Skin to rock in-game, visit the PalPrize Machine and spend those Animal Tokens.
