Artifact, released in late 2018, is a digital collectible card game based in the Dota 2 universe. Despite Dota 2’s massive success, Valve’s attempts to enter the card game space were not successful, and players felt there was a lot to be desired with Artifact.

In a recent interview with Edge Magazine, Valve co-founder and CEO Gabe Newell announced that they will be working on a huge update for Artifact. The update is so massive that they will be referring to the project internally as Artifact 2.

Newell mentioned that the new project will be a huge reboot, a necessary endeavor to get players interested in the game again. The failure of Artifact came as a surprise to Newell. “Artifact was an interesting failure in its first go-round”, Newell told Edge. “We thought that it was a really strong product.”

In mid-2019, Valve announced they would be suspending future updates for Artifact to take a step back and look at the future of the game. This is the first major Artifact related announcement we’ve heard since then. The original Artifact game was an experiment for them, and they learned what people did not like about it.

According to Newell, the project is “getting ready to release”, so we’ll be on the lookout for future updated regarding this new project from Valve.
