How to Get the Skeleton Curse in Sea of Thieves

Rattle me bones!

Being an animated magical skeleton is a surprisingly convenient way to live (for a given degree of “live,” anyway). No muscle cramps, you can’t bleed out, and you don’t feel hot or cold; if you’re a swarthy adventurer, you couldn’t ask for a better state of being! If that sounds appealing to you, then here’s how to get the Skeleton Curse in Sea of Thieves.

How to Get the Skeleton Curse in Sea of Thieves

The Skeleton Curse is a cosmetic item in Sea of Thieves that allows you to transform your character into a magically-animated skeleton. Unfortunately, it is only cosmetic; you can still take damage and whatnot as you usually would, but the sheer cool factor makes up for that shortcoming.

The Skeleton Curse is the signature cosmetic of the Reaper’s Bones Trading Company, as well as their associated faction, the Servants of the Flame. As such, if you want to get this lovely curse for yourself, you’re going to need to get cozy with both.

To be eligible for the Skeleton Curse, you need to fulfill three requirements:

  • You need at least 75 Reputation with Reaper’s Bones
  • You need to purchase the Champion of the Flame Promotion
  • You need at least 100 Allegiance with Servants of the Flame

The first two requirements are part and parcel with one another. You can gain Reputation with Reaper’s Bones by selling stuff to the Servant of the Flame, raising your Emissary Grade at a Reaper’s Bones Emissary Table, and unlocking Commendations (i.e. achievements) associated with Reaper’s Bones. You’ll get the most Reputation by selling Reaper-associated items to the Servant of the Flame, like Reaper’s Chests, Reaper’s Bounties, and Broken Emissary Flags. Once you’ve gotten enough Reputation to reach Rank 75 in the company, you can purchase the Champion of the Flame Promotion for 33,250 Gold.

Next, you need to get in good with the Servants of the Flame. After you join up, the best way to build Allegiance with the faction is by battling boats from their opposing faction, the Guardians of Fortune. You’ll get Allegiance whether you win or lose, though obviously, you’ll get more if you win. You’ll get more Allegiance if you win multiple battles in a row, especially if your opponents have large Faction Stashes. Speaking of, you can also utilize your Faction Stash to build Allegiance; just gather up treasure while sailing around in the Servants’ name, and you’ll increase your Faction Stash Grade. When you’ve got a lot of treasure, visit an Outpost and vote to leave the Servants to cash in your grade. This will build Allegiance, and you can immediately re-join afterward.

Once all of the requirements have been met, chat with the Servant of the Flame. For your hard work, he’ll reward you with a special sea shanty that, when played, will give you passage into the Reaper’s Lair. At the large tree at the bottom of the lair, you can conduct the Ritual of Flame, unlocking the Skeleton Curse and adding it to your inventory for your personal use.

Don’t forget to visit the Bonesmith in Reaper’s Lair! Throw them some Gold, and they’ll sell you special cosmetic tweaks for your Skeleton Curse like weird skulls, peg legs, and funny hats.
