War Thunder has come up with a major update called “Sky Guardians” and players are thrilled to see many changes that it brought to airplane warfare, tank battles, and naval battles. However, even though new vehicles were introduced, one of the first things that players will notice is the maps and mission changes.
Newly available gear will affect only those players that use it, while map changes and mission changes affect virtually everyone. Read on to find out what you can expect from War Thunder’s latest updates.

New Locations in War Thunder’s Sky Guardians Update
Newly introduced locations in the Sky Guardians update include a completely new map called the Pyrenees, and a couple of winter versions of existing maps – Seversk-13, Ardennes, and Maginot Line. The Pyrenees is a completely new location for air battles while the winter maps of the Seversk-13, Ardennes, and Maginot Line are tank battles.
While the change of ground landscape is mostly a matter of aesthetics for airplane players, the snowy updates to the ground battle maps are much more significant for tank players. Even seemingly minor changes, like adding snow, can significantly impact the visibility and the overview of the map. In the end, your gameplay experience might change significantly even though you are playing a map you are already familiar with.
New Missions in War Thunder’s Sky Guardians Update
When it comes to missions, there’s been quite a few changes in this regard. First of all, air battles have seen two new Ground Strike Missions introduced:
- In Pyrenees map (Mountain Valleys).
- In Sinai map (beginner and standard version).
Realistic battles (RB) have received some new missions in this update and they include Operations:
- Sinai
- Vietnam
- Ladoga Winter 1941
- Pyrenees
- Moscow
An experimental layout change has been introduced to Operations Golan Heights, Sinai, Vietnam, Pyrenees, and Moscow where airfields are now both located 46km from the center of the mission. The developers note that this update is subject to change if the gameplay shows that it’s unbalanced.
When it comes to Naval missions there are changes to respawn points. The respawn points are now further away from each other and are being formed as columns instead of rows. The developers believe that this would lead to a better experience and quicker battle start. Maps affected by the changes are Palau Islands, Fuego Islands, Green mountains gulf, Fiji and Domination maps African Gulf and Aleutian Islands.
Also, if you play Fuego Islands often you should know that the combat zone has been reduced and that the western small fleet respawn point has been moved eastwards.
