What do the Different Chest Colors Mean in Enter the Gungeon?

Every normal floor of the Gungeon contains at least two treasure rooms, within which are chests that contain either guns or passive items (or something else entirely in some cases). You can also get chests as occasional rewards for clearing rooms, using shrines, completing challenges, and more.

Regular chests that you find in these situations come in five different colors and designs, each fancier and more elaborate than the one before. These colors and designs denote the quality of the item/gun contained within the chest, which indicates to you how much you want to burn a key and crack ’em open. Regular chests can appear in the following colors:

  • Brown Chests: D-Quality items
  • Blue Chests: C-Quality items
  • Green Chests: B-Quality items
  • Red Chests: A-Quality items
  • Black Chests: S-Quality items

Special Chest Types

In addition to the regular chests, there are also a handful of special chest types. These chests can occasionally take the place of regular chests in treasure rooms, or otherwise appear in special rooms or under special conditions.

  • Synergy Chests (light blue, two arrows on top): Spins a slot when opened. If it lands on blue, you’ll get a gun or item that has a synergy with a gun or item you already have. If it lands on red, you’ll get a random gun or item.
  • Rat Chests (gray with a gold rat skull on top): Only found in the Resourceful Rat’s Lair, contain four special items that turn your character into the Resourceful Rat.
  • Rainbow Chests (regular chests with a shimmering rainbow color): Contains a random assortment of eight guns and items with various Qualities. Has a small chance of replacing regular and Synergy chests in regular runs, appear exclusively in Rainbow Mode.
  • Truth Chests (purple with a T on top): Found in secret rooms alongside Brother Albern. Answer his question to open the chest, which contains random items and pickups. You can also destroy the Truth Chest to receive a Lie item.
  • Revival Chests (gray with a skull on it): Only appears in co-op mode when one player has been killed. Open the chest to revive them.
  • Glitch Chests (regular chest that’s visibly glitching): Randomly appears in the first three chambers. When opened, you’re warped to a glitched version of the next floor, where you’ll fight an enhanced boss that rewards a random assortment of seven items and guns upon defeat.
  • Mimics: Occasionally replace regular chests and looks nearly identical to them. Reveals a mouth and guns when opened and attacks, dropping loot upon defeat.

Keep these various chest types in mind as you progress through the Gungeon. As you get further down, you can make an informed decision on whether or not you want to give up your precious keys on chests that may not be worth it.
