It’s pretty clear, whether you’re a player of Hi-Rez Studios’ iconic MOBA title Smite that its impact on the gaming industry has helped shape the landscape of multiplayer and live-service titles. Coming up on its tenth anniversary, the game is hosting a major in-game event and offering up one of its original villains as a boss to purchase.
Returning from the grave, is Surtr, a god that hasn’t been seen in-game since Smite’s initial betas back in the day. But what does Surtr’s inclusion mean for Smite? Today, we’ll explain who Surtr is in Smite and everything we know about him.
Who is Surtr in Smite? Everything We Know So Far
Regarding what we know of Surtr’s backstory in Smite, there isn’t too much, though it is there. Surtr originally appeared in Smite’s beta which happened before its official release in 2013. Since then, the character had never really played a big part in anything aside from being a boss in the Conquest mode.
Flash forward to a recent trailer that debuted for the character, showing off a little more backstory, and gearing fans up to want to purchase and play as him when the Fire Giant Update goes live on January 18, 2023. Surtr is a Fire Giant, one whose evil has been bouted many times by heroic gods.

The trailer shows as much, as Surtr lives a sort of Groundhog’s Day of reaching the mortal world, facing off against the hero gods, and then being defeated, only to restart the cycle again and again. Though it seems that with Year 10, Surtr has become the victor, learning from his past weaknesses and finally being able to have proper fights within the arena of Smite’s landscape.
It’s a pretty thrilling scenario and ties in perfectly with Smite as all players play into this live, die, and repeat mentality. Surtr really is just a great example of the circle of Smite’s life, ten years in the making. Aside from his story, not much is known about Surtr’s strengths, weaknesses, or abilities are going to be. As he’s a Fire Giant, it’s pretty safe to say that some kind of pyro attacks are going to be his forte and that he’s an offensive god, ready to take the fight to the enemy.
So, that’s really everything to know about Surtr’s inclusion in Smite up to this point. If you’d like, be sure to check out some of our other great Smite guides too, such as Smite Tier List (January 2023). And like Gamer Journalist on Facebook to be kept in the know of all upcoming Smite news!
