How to Build a Raft in Stranded Deep

It's never as easy as it looks on TV.

People joke a lot about how Giligan’s Island would be a much shorter series if the stranded people just built a raft, but have you ever actually tried to make a raft from scratch? It’s definitely not as easy as it looks on TV. If you don’t believe me, then I’ll show you how involved this process is. Here’s how to build a raft in Stranded Deep.

How to Build a Raft in Stranded Deep

A Raft is a vital means of transportation and survival in Stranded Deep. You start out the game with a rubber Life Raft, but that thing won’t last forever, which means constructing your own Rafts from scratch is an absolute must. It’s only with a Raft that you can explore the ocean in search of important survival necessities and progression.

In order to create a Raft from scratch, you need three components. First, you need a base constructed from buoyant materials. Second, you need a platform that you can safely stand atop without submerging yourself in the water. Finally, you need a means of propulsion to actually move the raft around. All three of these components can be crafted with stuff found in the water and on land.

Let’s start with the base. There are four kinds of Raft bases you can create, each made with different materials:

  • Wood Bundle Raft Base: 14 Wood Sticks and 1 Lashing
  • Buoy Ball Raft Base: 5 Buoy Balls and 1 Lashing
  • Tire Raft Base: 2 Tires and 1 Lashing
  • Barrel Raft Base: 3 Barrels and 1 Lashing

Once the base is set up, the next step is a platform for you to walk on. In case you were wondering, you can’t build the platform until the base is set up. There are four kinds of platforms you can create:

  • Wood Raft Floor: 4 Wood Sticks
  • Plank Raft Floor: 2 Plank Scraps
  • Corrugated Raft Floor: 2 Corrugated Scraps
  • Brick Raft Floor: 2 Brick Scraps

Finally, we need propulsion, the means by which you’ll control the movement and steering of your Raft. There are two means of propulsion you can use, which are intended for different speeds and levels of exploration.

  • Sail and Rudder: Two Wood Sticks, 1 Cloth, 1 Lashing for the Sail, 2 Wood Sticks, 1 Cloth, 1 Lashing for the Rudder
  • Boat Motor: 1 Vehicle Motor Part, 1 Vehicle Electrical Part, 1 Vehicle Filter Part, 1 Vehicle Fuel Part, 1 Duct Tape. Hammer required to build

You can create a basic raft by mixing and matching any of these components, though if you have a surplus of stuff, you can build a larger, multiplatform raft. Just build the bases and platforms next to each other to attach them, in the same way you build larger huts. You can also attach multiple means of propulsion to increase your speed and maneuverability.
