It’s been theorized that ghosts appear in places haunted by some kind of grudge, like a crime or an unjust death. Usually, it’s just one ghost that appears in these cases, but if there were three ghosts? Well, whatever went down there must’ve been pretty nasty. Let’s put this unpleasant business to bed. Here’s how to defeat the Three Shades in Lone Ruin.
How to Defeat the Three Shades in Lone Ruin
The Three Shades are the second boss you’ll encounter in a Lone Ruin run, found on the 14th level. When you enter the room, the spectral beast appears with a skeletal face clad in a large robe and a massive cleaver in its bony hand. Boy, I bet he’s fun at parties.

This Shade will come at you hard and fast with its cleaver, leaping around the arena in an effort to either crush you with its weight or slash you. If you were wondering why this boss is called the “Three Shades” when there’s only one, that’s because once you’ve gotten the first guy’s health down low enough, a second Shade will appear. This Shade will launch wide, fan-shaped shot patterns in your general direction, all while the first one continues its attack. After more damage, the third Shade will appear as well, covering the arena in a rotating pinwheel of shots. It’s a fight that gets progressively more crowded and hectic as time goes on.
Fighting the Three Shades
This is a fight in which crowd control measures are an absolute must. Spells that hit multiple targets at once like Chain Lightning, Black Hole, and Blizzard will be your best friends here. The Shades all share a single health bar, so if your attacks can hit all of them at once, it all counts simultaneously, shaving off big chunks of their health.
One Blessing that can make this fight much more manageable is the Rancid Berry, which provides a damage multiplier for every enemy inflicted with a status effect. If you can slow or burn all three Shades at once, your regular spell attacks will do even more damage to them. Just be aware that once all three Shades are on the fields, none of them are going away until their health bar drains. Be ready to dodge a lot of shots and cleaver slashes as you herd them together for AOE damage.
Keep binding them together and laying on the pain, and the curse of the Three Shades will be dispelled. And we didn’t even need to call an exorcist.
