Chained Echoes has become a wonderful last-minute delight of 2022 gaming. This near-perfect JRPG tribute has everything you’d expect from one man’s lone attempt to pay tribute to everything we know and love about the game genre. Indeed Chained Echoes is full of fun and quirky characters, an endless gallery of villains, and convoluted twists and turns one after the other. That’s what makes a true JRPG great though really. Some of the choices may not have gone over well with everyone, but we are here to help you put them all into perspective. Here’s Chained Ehcoes’ ending explained, the final boss, and what happens next.
Chained Echoes’ Ending Explained [SPOILER WARNING]
There are so many multi-layered issues to go through with what the ending could spell out for the future of the game if it becomes a series. We will do our best to keep the key points simple and sweet, however. This also means a MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING from here on. If you haven’t beaten the game yet, we suggest coming back after. Chances are you’re reading this already because you’re either quite upset or confused by the last 20 minutes or so of the story.

Glenn
To keep it short, the ending focuses on the two main male characters, Glenn and Kylian. Glenn has lived several lives in order to become a True King, which is essentially a god in this world. Things don’t really go as planned for the man behind Glenn’s reincarnations and that’s where most of the Chained Echoes story plays out. However, by the end of the game’s storyline Glenn is just tired and feels he has redeemed himself enough and gives up his life to save the life of someone he believes deserves a second chance more than him, that being Kylian.
Kylian
How you feel about Kylian probably determines how much you enjoyed or hated the ending of the game. He is a very flawed and broken character to be sure. Kylian basically betrays the party several times in a misguided attempt to make the world a better place for his sister who is in a coma. He makes all the wrong choices and becomes possessed by the end, which leads to our final boss battle.
The real kicker is however after the final boss is defeated, Kylian attempts to sacrifice himself to get rid of the evil beings still inside him possessing his body. Glenn, however, in a final twist, chooses to sacrifice himself instead. He allows Kylian to continue living and redeem himself. Some may find Kylian irredeemable but the main theme of the story seems to be redemption and second chances.

The Final Boss
The final boss is the deformed boy of Kylian possessed by evil entities from another world called the Vaen. The Vaen’s goal is to destroy the world of course. Many characters’ goals are to stop the Vaen in this prophetic attempt but only Kylian sacrifices himself and Glenn with the help of his party finally destroying them.
This Boss battle has several fake-outs and phases. You’ll face Kylian in his most powerful state for a short time, then he will take you to another dimension controlled by his mind. After you defeat him, he will open the gate to the Vaen’s domain and they will possess him. The Vaen-controlled Kylian is the true final boss. The battle is pretty standard and you just keep doing what you’ve been doing throughout the game to win.
What happens Next
After the Vaen have been defeated, Kylian seemingly destroys his body to rid the world of them. In some vague and unexplained twist, Glenn takes the Vaen from Kylian and sacrifices himself instead. Kylian then pretends to be Glenn until the very end when he leaves on a ship to discover his new purpose as a True King, the 8th god of the world of Eldrea.
This is all a very open-ended last scene that clearly sets up for a possible sequel to continue Kylian’s redemption. Many other characters’ side stories are a bit open-ended as well such as Amalia’s Curse. So there can easily be a continuation either focusing on Kylian’s redemption or more of the True Kings’ involvement.
Either way, the game does throw a lot of twists and moral dilemmas at the player, and depending on what you think of character redemption you may or may not enjoy the controversial ending.
