How to Defeat Cankertoads in The Chant

Perhaps one of the better survival horror titles to release this year has to be Prime Matter and Brass Token’s The Chant. It’s a bleak world with gruesome character designs and an eerie feeling that stays through to the end of the credits.

It’s the type of game that even scared cats like myself can enjoy, but can still get a jump or two out of us. Speaking of jumps, or, hops, there’s an enemy in Chapter 3 that will surely get the better of you. If you’re trying to figure out how to defeat the Cankertoads in The Chant, then we can help!

How to Defeat Cankertoads in The Chant

Shortly after taking out the waves of enemies awaiting you at the mine’s elevator entrance as you chase after Sonny, you’ll finally be able to get into the mines and do a bit of exploration as you look for him. Things take a turn though as once he’s confronted, he leaves you in the darkened mines, looking for fuses to place in the surrounding light generators.

As you look around, you’ll come face to face with a brand-new enemy type, the Cankertoad. Cankertoads are pretty nasty enemies as not only can they attack you by biting, but they can also shoot projectile bile acid at you, causing Jess to take further damage.

They aren’t quick enemies though and can be taken out if you use fire weapons against them such as the Fire Oil or Fire Lash. Be careful though as even in death, they can be dangerous. Killing them will cause them to explode, throwing that toxic bile acid in all directions, even onto their own brethren, and injuring them too.

Your best bet is to remain vigilant, utilizing the dodge function often to get in for melee attacks when possible, dodging ranged attacks, and backing out when you’ve struck a final blow so as to miss the explosion of bile. Use those tips and you’ll have no issue getting through these disgusting creatures.
