Creating a combat system for a game where combat isn’t the explicit focus is a tricky business. Harvestella, for instance, is primarily a farming and life sim game, but you will still need to venture into the wilderness to take on monsters and gather materials. It may not be your forte, but if you wanna stay alive, you need quick feet. Here’s how to dodge and dash in Harvestella.
How to Dodge and Dash in Harvestella
Harvestella’s combat system places a greater emphasis on offense and defense than mobility. Rather than trying to dodge out of the way of blows, you’re more encouraged to tank the damage and engage in an old-fashioned DPS race with your opponent. That said, there are at least a few mobility tricks you should keep in mind.

Firstly, dashing. You’ll be able to dash as soon as you enter a combat area for the first time. To dash, just hold down the ZL button/Left Trigger while walking. You’ll break into a sprint, moving faster than you normally would. Keep an eye on the stamina meter located under your health, as dashing will gradually drain it. If it empties out completely, you’ll need to wait for it to refill a bit before you can start dashing again.
Stick and Move
Dodging in Harvestella is a bit of a complicated matter, specifically because there isn’t a dodge move. Not right away, anyway; in order to unlock a quick dodge, you need to level up your character Jobs, Fighter to be specific. Once you level up Fighter enough, you’ll unlock a special skill called Step, allowing you to dodge a short distance with a tap of the ZL button/Left Trigger. You should know, however, that Step does not have invincibility frames and can only be used while you have the Fighter Job equipped.
Generally, to trick to mobility in Harvestella is to give enemies and their attacks a wide berth. Using your dash, as well as dodge when possible, you want to run in, deliver a few attacks, then run back out of their range before they can retort. You can’t dodge enemy attacks when they’re right next to you, so the best way to stay out of trouble is to be far away.
It’s a bit of an unusual system, yes, but once you get the hit-and-run nature of it figured out, monsters won’t be able to lay a finger on you. You’ll be slipperier than an oiled-up ferret.
