  9. Ja Morant (93), PG – Memphis Grizzlies
  10. Jimmy Butler (93), SF/PF – Miami Heat

At first glance, it feels like these NBA 2K23 launch ratings are fairly accurate. Coming off yet another dominant campaign that saw him average over 29.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.1 assists per game, while shooting better than 55% from the field. It’s hard to argue against Giannis Antetokounmpo as the best player in the NBA.

Falling closely behind we have the greatest scorer of all time (Kevin Durant), the greatest shooter of all time (Steph Curry), the greatest player of all time (LeBron James), and the reigning back-to-back MVP of the league (Nikola Jokic). So, the top 5 seem to be deserving of their ratings. Past that, things start to get a little confusing.

Ja Morant is coming off a dominant year in which he led the Grizzlies to 56 wins and second place in the Western Conference. Which was good enough for him to be in the running for league MVP, so his rating is more than justified. And the same can be said for Jayson Tatum, who took his Celtics all the way to the NBA Finals and put up career-highs across the board in every major statistical category.

However, despite missing all of last season, Kawhi Leonard carries almost the exact same rating in NBA 2K23 as he did in NBA 2K22. While Damian Lillard, who we actually saw compete last year, albeit in a limited capacity. Has fallen outside of the top 10, landing well below his NBA 2K22 rating of 94. Jimmy Butler has also risen from a 91 to a 93, despite averaging fewer points, rebounds, assists, and steals per game throughout the regular season. While the cover athlete for NBA 2K23 (Devin Booker) didn’t even crack the top 10. Nor did the runner-up for league MVP, Joel Embiid.

Obviously, these ratings will fluctuate over the course of the regular season, and for the most part, they are pretty accurate. I just find it interesting some of the names that were left out of the conversation.
