New Side Quests Confirmed for Resident Evil 4 Remake

A new method of upgrading that could become a permanent part of Resident Evil

Capcom’s Director Yasuhiro Ampo and Game Director Kazunori Kadoi for Resident Evil 4 Remake discuss the various changes that have been implemented into crafting the returning Resident Evil 4. It has been 18 years since the initial release of the fourth installment into the Resident Evil franchise. With many referring to RE4 as a masterpiece in the franchise, Directors Kadoi and Ampo confirm that remaking this Survival Horror Game will be a tough job to complete. With changes within the gameplay such as the environment and combat mechanics, Capcom have transformed Resident Evil to fit the mold of the modern day AAA Video Game. Among these changes are the Side Quests, similar to Resident Evil 8: Village.

Why Capcom Added Side Quests to RE4 Remake

Ampo and Kadoi describe a new addition into the game’s linear storytelling, these are the Side Quests in Resident Evil 4 Remake. Whilst these will not run similar to typical Side Quests as seen in a typical RPG, players will be able to complete Quests given by the Shop Keeper in order to upgrade their overall stats. Such stats that you will be able to upgrade are your overall Health and Speed stats. This is a system we have only previously seen in Resident Evil 8: Village where you would obtain Meat from the Village animals to create dishes with the Merchant in order to upgrade. This time however, you will complete specific Quests given by the Shop Keeper, where you can sell, trade, purchase and upgrade gear from this merchant throughout the Remake.

The shift towards a revised version of its original form compliments what we now see within modern Video Games. As Ampo and Kadoi explain to Game Informer, these changes had to be made as just remaking the original would feel too outdated for Video Games that are created in the last 10 years. Whilst Resident Evil 4 by no means is an open-world Survival Adventure Game, the use of the Side Quests will add a separate feel and offer new gameplay for players to sink their teeth into. To confirm however, these will not be similar to what we have seen in Resident Evil 8, rather you will complete Quests to obtain rewards for small upgrades throughout your adventure.

All New Combat Changes in RE4 Remake

Capcom felt that whilst the original Resident Evil 4 remains a masterpiece, its remake would not translate well into the current climate of AAA Video Games. Ampo and Kadoi explain that certain gameplay aspects such as Quick-Time Events are now outdated and are rarely seen in Video Games. This awareness meant that a crucial gameplay change would need to be made. However, these appeared more in the realm of subtle mechanic changes and upgrades. Some of these are the more refined and updated knife, with Kadoi taking more focus onto using the knife over a gun. Players now have the choice to make when face-to-face with an opponent on how to escape their hold as they try to overwhelm you.

The knife upgrades can also be seen in the varied animation and the decision to make the knife stronger but with limited use. This makes the weapon both a more reliable tool to fall back on and as a strategic choice to finish a downed enemy or reserve ammo. Of course, you cannot fully rely on the knife itself, but its upgrade is an important one towards the survival horror elements. Along with the knife getting a update, a parry system has also been implemented into the Remake. Not only this but, Leon now can easily dodge and turn to avoid the attacks of the enemies, making the combat more fluid than in the original.
