Credits are being reintroduced, matchmaking is being further updated, new season events are coming, and most importantly for some – talk about bringing back “On Fire” status.

Will We See On Fire Heroes in Overwatch 2?

The latest comments from Blizzard developers signaled that the “On Fire” system is in the works for Overwatch 2. They explained that they want to reward the great performance people are having in their games and that would like to further boost the hero-based progression system. Since the community has been talking about this for a while now, this is definitely a reward for everyone speaking out about the changes they want to see.

“On Fire” has been a great Overwatch 1 mechanic where each player was rewarded with an “On Fire” status whenever they would dominate the battlefield with an array of consecutive kills or assists. This would be displayed on the icon around their hero picture and visible to everyone in the match.

What Does On Fire Status Mean for the Community?

Some can say that “On Fire” is just cosmetics and nothing more, but I would disagree. I can remember as far back as season three of the original Overwatch when I grinded and grinded to turn my Gold rank into Platinum one. “On fire” status wasn’t something that happened often for me, but once it did I remember it gave me an adrenaline rush. You can even call it Overwatch doping perhaps.

We can all probably agree that when in competitive matchmaking (of any game) we are being extra careful since there’s a lot on the line. So we tend to be more passive than would usually be and don’t step up and push when it’s time because we want to play it safe.

For me, the “On Fire” system really helped in overcoming passiveness and encourage me to step up and be bolder. It gives out a certain boost of self-confidence, rewarding you for your amazing streak and telling you that you can dominate the match if you just dare to try it. This is the reason why I believe the return of the “On Fire” heroes in our matches is vital.
