As you travel around the world of Valheim, you’ll encounter a few different kinds of resources available to collect. You can use these resources in many item recipes, but there’s one harvesting tool you are probably wondering how to craft: the pickaxe. In survival games, pickaxes are typically a common starter item used to harvest stones and minerals. Valheim takes a bit of a different approach, and it may take you a while to find out how to make one unless you follow the proper steps. Here’s how to make a pickaxe in Valheim.

How to Make a Pickaxe in Valheim
To make a pickaxe in Valheim, you will need the following:
- 10 Wood
- 1 Hard Antler
- Upgraded Workbench
Collecting ten pieces of wood is straightforward enough. Simply build yourself a stone axe and start chopping down some trees. Make sure they don’t fall on top of you! You’ll get the most wood from chopping the fallen trees until there’s nothing left.
Now, the item a lot of people are confused about is the Hard Antler. To get this item and unlock additional recipes, you will need to defeat Eikthyr, the game’s first Forsaken boss. After defeating Eikthyr, he’ll drop a couple of Hard Antlers, which unlocks the Antler Pickaxe recipe. We have a guide you can follow on how to summon and defeat Eikthyr in Valheim, so check it out if you want to know how to do this easily.
Once you have the required materials, head back to your house or wherever you have the upgraded workbench. Open up the crafting menu, and look for the Antler pickaxe recipe. Tap on craft, and you’re good to go!
After you make a pickaxe, your buddy Hugin will fly down nearby and explain that the black forest is rich in minerals. You can use your Antler pickaxe to destroy large stones, copper, and tin. Copper is typically in the ground, while tin is on the ocean floor. Rocks, on the other hand, are all over the place.
