How to Get the True Ending in Freedom Planet 2

There's always a little more to the story.

The original Freedom Planet was a strictly linear game. Just play the stages from start to finish, and you win. Freedom Planet 2, however, employs a more open-ended design in its story mode, and hidden within that story is the potential for a secret. Here’s how to get the true ending in Freedom Planet 2.

In order to unlock the true ending in Freedom Planet 2, you need to collect all 13 Time Capsules. These Time Capsules collectively tell the story of Cordelia the earth dragon and her place in the war between earth dragons and water dragons. You can watch their contents by interacting with Pangu in Shang Tu Palace, though actually watching them isn’t a requirement, so don’t worry if you don’t have access to Pangu.

You can obtain the Time Capsules in any order, but in all likelihood, the first one you find will be in the museum in Adventure Square in the Parusa region. If you enter the museum and take the elevator to the top floor, the Time Capsule will be sitting on the shelf, where you can just grab it.

A Record of the Past

After you get the first Time Capsule, the game will inform you that the other 12 Time Capsules can be won as prizes from the Battlesphere’s challenges. If you return to Shang Mu and enter the Battlesphere, you can find the list of challenges. The challenges with Time Capsules as rewards will display them on the select screen; you only have to win the challenge, and you don’t have to set a record or anything. Don’t worry about the boss rematches or home run challenges, either.

The only thing you should be aware of is that the challenges aren’t all available from the start. They gradually unlock as you progress through the story and complete stages. All of the challenges with Time Capsules as rewards will be available after you finish all three episodes in the game’s second act.

Once you have all 13 Time Capsules, you can just proceed through the game as normal. Once you get to the final boss fight against Merga and defeat her, a special cutscene will play, and you’ll be taken to a secret stage with one last boss fight to go. After you finish this stage, the regular ending cutscene will play, and you’ll get an extra bonus scene afterward.

Fair warning, the secret stage is a real butt-kicker! It’s worth it to get a little more insight into Freedom Planet 2’s backstory, though.
