How to get a Fishing Rod and Fish in Valheim

Fishing is a great way to replenish your food supplies in Valheim. Food is the primary way to buff up your stamina and health pool, so you’ll want to make sure you have a full stock of it for the more challenging battles in the game. One of the ways to get food aside from hunting and gathering is through fishing. You’ll need to get yourself a fishing rod first, but you might not know how to do that. Here’s how to get a fishing rod and fish in Valheim.

How to get a Fishing Rod in Valheim

To get yourself a fishing rod in Valheim, you’ll need to find a merchant out in one of the biomes. You’ll likely encounter your first merchant in a nearby Black Forest biome, perhaps after you build a boat and do some sailing to faraway lands. The merchant shows up as a bag on your map, so you can easily tell if one is nearby.

Speak with the merchant, and make sure you have some gold on hand or gems to sell. The fishing rod costs 350 Gold, but you’ll also need to pick up some stacks of bait. Fishing bait only costs 10 gold for a stack of 50, so you may want to pick up a few stacks at a time because you use one piece of bait for every cast of the line.

How to Fish in Valheim

Now that you have your fishing rod and fishing bait, it’s time to learn how to fish. Head to any nearby body of water, like an ocean, and equip your fishing rod. Next, right-click on the fishing bait item in your inventory. Doing this equips it to your fishing rod so that the fish will bite.

Fishing rod in hand, hold left-click on your mouse to charge your cast and then release. The longer you press the left-click button, the farther you’ll cast the line. The sweet spot for fishing in Valheim is probably between 10 to 20 meters. Any longer than that, and you might have a tough time reeling in your catch without running out of stamina.

How to get a Fishing Rod and Fish in Valheim - Catching

Keep an eye on the bobber, and when you see a flash of light, that means there’s a fish nearby. You can tap right-click on your mouse to reel in the line slowly. When the fish bites, you will see the word “Hooked” show up on your screen. Once you hook a fish, hold right-click to reel it in. Your stamina slowly depletes as you reel, which is why you don’t want to cast your line too far out. Hold right-click until the fish is entirely reeled into you and in your inventory.

You will get raw fish meat for every fish you reel in, and the larger catches can give you multiple pieces. Cook the raw fish inside any fire to get yourself to get Cooked fish, which gives you the following stats:

  • Health: 45
  • Stamina: 25
  • Duration: 1200s
  • Healing: 2 hp/tick
