In Hogwarts Legacy, there are two kinds of attacks:

  • The type of attacks you counter with Pretego.
  • The type of attacks you can’t counter and have to dodge.

The game denotes between these two for you. If an attack can be blocked, you will get a yellow circular warning above your head. The circle will close in on you as the attack gets closer. Once the circle is done, the attack connects, so you have that much time to hit your Protego button and counter it.

If the circle above your head is red and not yellow, then the incoming attack cannot be blocked. In that case, you need to dodge out of the way of the attack before the circle closes. If you try to block the attack, it will break your block and still deal damage.

If you’re getting hit by a yellow attack and time your block just before the circle finishes, it will reflect the attack back at the attacker. However, that doesn’t apply to dodging. If you need to dodge – it’s a sign to just get out of the way.

While blocking can’t protect against both types of attacks – dodge rolling can. Your dodges will keep you safe from any kind of incoming spell. It’s so strong that you could just spam it in combat if you were panicking, and you would probably be fine.

If you’re still uncomfortable with combat, dodge rolling can allow you to easily avoid enemy attacks of all kinds while you’re getting used to blocking.

Dodge Roll Upgrade

Your dodge roll in Hogwarts Legacy has a Talent Point upgrade that is one of the best in the entire game. It lets you turn your regular roll into a short-range apparition (think Order of the Pheonix in the Ministry). This apparition dodge has great range, is controllable, and makes you invulnerable for its duration.

The Talent Point you’re looking for is called “Swift” and is located in the Core tree. Grab it, and start working it into your regular combat gameplay. You’ll notice its impact straight away.

The upgrade does have one use beyond that. If you’re ever in an open-world situation where you need to travel but can’t use your broom, spamming the apparition out of combat is significantly faster than running. You can also use it to skip the slow crawling animations when you’re moving under obstacles.

Dodge rolling in Hogwarts Legacy, along with the apparition upgrade, are incredible inside and outside of combat. Make sure you’re using it to its full potential.
